STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—One of the most anticipated construction projects on Tarleton State University’s campus took its first step toward completion on Feb. 27. The university’s Southwest Regional Dairy Center, which is designed to be a model dairy, broke ground at the construction site with a ceremonial cow, plow and milking.

The highly anticipated center is expected to be a premier learning and research dairy serving Texas and its surrounding states. A crowd of approximately 300 gathered in support of the dairy, which will serve as “the” dairy of research and learning for The Texas A&M University System as well as the state of Texas.

Dr. Don Cawthon, dean of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences, started the ceremony with a brief synopsis of how the idea for the dairy started, who was instrumental in bringing it to life and what the ultimate goal for the dairy will be when it is finally completed.

“We anticipate stocking the dairy in January, maybe February 2010, and begin milking then,” Cawthon said. “There will be more than one phase to the dairy. The first phase will include a rotary parlor, several teaching labs, a classroom, a few offices and a 300-cow capacity.”

The second phase will include those things as well as bringing the herd capacity up to 600 cows and building a creamery that can produce dairy products such as cheese, milk, ice cream and many more.

After the Cawthon’s opening remarks, others who addressed the crowd included: Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio; Representative Sid Miller (District 59); Congressman John Carter (R-TX); Dr. Larry Boleman, Associate Vice Chancellor of Texas AgriLife Research; Nancy Hunter, Stephenville mayor; Tab Thompson, Erath County judge; and John Cowan, executive director of the Texas Association of Dairymen.

For the official ceremony, “Annie” (one of the university’s prize dairy cows) was harnessed to a vintage 1940s plow with President Dottavio at the reins. The remaining members of the group were given golden shovels to use to turn the dirt. Afterward, President Dottavio and Representative Miller were given the opportunity to participate in producing the purest dairy product by milking Annie. Audience members could also milk Annie if they chose to.

A representative for Landmark Structures Inc., one of the dairy’s first industry partners, was also on hand for the event.

Because the center will serve the southwest region of the United States, it will be designed to accommodate many research projects.

“We plan to open the dairy center up to other universities in the region so that they may also be able to use it for research and learning opportunities,” said Dr. Barry Lambert, department head and dairy science specialist. “We are working with others in the design phase so it will be useful to other universities and other groups, including industry.”

In addition to traditional dairy science research, other research applications that will be conducted at the center include business, finance, engineering, medical, animal behavior, labor management, energy recovery from agricultural wastes and environmental sciences. It will also serve as a center for agricultural undergraduate research.

Key points in the innovative design of the center include a rotary parlor, auto animal ID and multiple energy recovery systems. A start-up company in Waco, called EQMA, already has plans to build a demonstration plant at the center that will be able to turn manure into ethanol. Other industry partners are developing plans for methane, algae, biodiesel and additional innovative energy conversion technologies.

“Eventually, we would love for energy recovery systems at the dairy to help offset a portion or all of the facility’s electrical costs,” Lambert said.

Because of its location in the Bosque River watershed, much effort is being made to make the facility as environmentally friendly as possible.

“Restrictions are different in this watershed than others,” Lambert said. “Our environmental engineers are working with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to make sure the dairy has the minimal environmental impact that science currently allows.”

Future research and development will further refine and enhance the technology to lessen the center’s environmental impact.

The main architectural engineering firm for the project is Hanfeld Hoffer Stanford, which is based out of Fort Worth. However assisting in the center’s design is Five G Consulting, which is a dairy design company.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—With the tough economic conditions families are facing, paying for college is sometimes out of the question. Fortunately, Tarleton State University recently implemented the Texan Tuition Guarantee. The new program will offer aid-based tuition and fees for qualified freshmen enrolling at Tarleton in the fall 2009 semester.

Eligibility is need-based and students must be Texas residents to qualify.

“The Texas A&M University System actually coordinated this effort among the system schools,” said Denise Groves, dean of enrollment management at Tarleton. “Basically it is an institutional commitment to high-need students to have access to higher education.”

Groves said that the program will be a huge help to students in need.

“I believe the guarantee will make Tarleton a more viable opportunity to students who otherwise would not have such a chance,” Groves said. “Tarleton is proud to be a university that serves a large population of first-generation students, so it only makes sense that we put a program like this in place.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University is making new additions and changes to the Dick Smith Scholarship for the College of Science and Technology and College of Liberal and Fine Arts.

For the current scholarships, incoming freshman must be ranked in the top 25 percent of their class and have an ACT composite of 25 or higher or SAT total of 1100 or higher. Returning students must complete at least 15 hours each semester and have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.2 for the current semester and cumulative average. The current budget for the scholarship account is $195,000 and each student is awarded $3,000.

Due to investment income and oil royalties, Tarleton has additional funds to add two new components for the ‘09-10 academic school year. Both colleges will award two Dick Smith Premiere Scholarships for incoming freshmen and each college will have three new graduate scholarships to award.

The Dick Smith Premier Scholarship will be $9,000 per student. Each student must major in the College of Science and Technology or the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. Applicants must be ranked in the top 25 percent of their graduating class and have an ACT composite of 30 or higher or an SAT total of 1350 or higher.

To be eligible for the graduate scholarships, new graduate students must have a 3.2 graduate GPA and returning graduate students must have a 3.5 graduate GPA. Graduate applicants must also enroll in six hours of graduate work for the College of Science and Technology or the College of Liberal and Fine Arts.

To apply for all Tarleton scholarships, including the Dick Smith Scholarship, submit the general scholarship application available at www.tarleton.edu/~scholars before Feb. 15, 2009.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Business owners looking to expand or just learn more about international business can learn ideas from experts in the field during Tarleton State University’s second annual International Business Symposium.

The event, sponsored by the Business and International Education Initiative (BIEI), will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, Feb. 6.

Sessions on Thursday are free and will be held at the College of Business Administration. International business experts will discuss their organizations, jobs and careers.

Sessions for Friday are $25 per person and will be held at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 910 S. Harbin Dr., in Stephenville. It will feature breakfast along with keynote speaker Doug Smith, followed by roundtable sessions on getting involved or improving your company’s international business operations.

Smith is a senior international business consultant at the International Trade Center, University of Texas at San Antonio. He has been involved in international trade and marketing consulting for more than 20 years, focusing on import and export development, international marketing strategy and market research, marketing channel management and industry and economic research.

“We are excited to offer this caliber of international experts to the Stephenville business community,” said Dr. Janice Petronis, BIEI program director. “Even for small business owners who have never considered expanding outside the U.S. borders, this is an opportunity to talk one-on-one with advisers who can share ideas and know-how for future possibilities.”

Other experts who will attend the symposium are Cynthia Brink, Robert Fenyes, Julie Graham and Dennis Hardman.
• Brink is a bilingual intercultural trainer with a background in marketing and operations. She is a senior account executive for Business Horizons magazine and has lived and worked at Universidad Autonoma De Campeche, Mexico, South America, Germany and Australia.
• Fenyes works as an account manager for Domestic Cargo Operations for Expeditors International of Washington Inc., dealing with import, export and freight forwarding for companies such as Wal-Mart, Dell and FMC Technologies in Stephenville.
• Graham is co-owner of Specialty Parts and Electronic Components (S.P.E.C.) Inc. of Granbury and a member of the board of directors of First Financial Bank of Stephenville. S.P.E.C. is a stocking distributor of a wide range of electronic components from leading edge technology to hard-to-find, obsolete and allocated products. She will offer tips for growing a local business into an international one.
• Hardman, a Tarleton graduate, is owner of Texan Pecan Company of San Saba, Texas. He has served agricultural producers in the areas for more than 25 years as a broker to suppliers and buyers throughout Mexico, and most recently, China. He will share his expertise in identifying buyers or suppliers and how local ag producers can take advantage of international markets.

BIEI is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education and its purpose is to further internationalize the College of Business Administration curriculum by giving faculty, students and the area business community opportunities for increased international exposure and expertise.

“The BIEI grant also has given both the College of Business faculty and students the opportunity to travel and learn first-hand about global commerce,” Petronis said. “These have been truly life-changing experiences. We want to expand those opportunities to our local businesses as well.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—A Russian folktale full of humor and good moral will take center stage at Tarleton State University during the Theatre at Tarleton’s Young People Series.

Children of all ages will be delighted with the “The Frog Princess,” which was written by Cathy Howard and will be directed by Amy Reynolds, a senior theatre major at Tarleton who will graduate in May.

Public performances will be held at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium. Tickets are $3 per person and available at the door.

In this entertaining adaptation of a Russian folktale, a vain, but loving queen—Queen Natasha—decides the time has come to pass the kingdom over to one of her three very different sons—Boris, Casimir and Sasha. But first, each must find a suitable bride—because behind every king is a great queen.

Struggling for the position of queen is a warrior princess named Ursula, a spoiled princess named Vass and a frog princess named Natalia. Since only the best wife may become queen, there are challenges to overcome and that is where the fun really begins. This very clever story teaches the lesson of forgiving one another and how it pays to be kind to everyone—including frogs!

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Student Wildlife Society won the Texas Wildlife Quiz Bowl in Lubbock, Texas, on Feb. 26, beating Texas Tech, Stephen F. Austin and Texas State universities.

This is the second year in a row Tarleton has taken top honors in this event after winning the Wildlife Triathlon in Fort Collins, Colo., last year.

Team members include Joni Barck, Randi Baldwin, Jeremy Edwardson, Nathan Grigsby, Dawson Lilly, Alan Mathews, Travis Sagebiel and Erica Swenson.

The team will travel to Logan, Utah, to compete in the Western Wildlife Conclave March 6 through March 9.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—On Dec. 6, the Cross Timbers Civic Chorale will join the Tarleton University Singers, Chamber Choir and Select Women’s Ensemble in the university’s 29th annual production of George Fredric Handel’s “Messiah.” It will also be Dr. Charles Rives 26th year as the production’s conductor.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University is celebrating V-Day in March.

This V-Day is not about cupid and hearts. Instead, it’s a global movement to end violence against women and girls by raising funds and awareness through benefit productions of Eve Ensler’s award-winning “The Vagina Monologues.”

Through V-Day campaigns, local volunteers and college students produce the performances of the award-winning show, which is a compilation of moving stories of women from many different backgrounds.

“The Vagina Monologues” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, in the Workshop Theater at the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center. Tickets are available at the door. Adult price is $15; students are $10. Carol Stavish, associate professor of theater, is the show’s organizer.

The cast of the show includes members of Tarleton’s chapter of the National Theatre Honor Fraternity Alpha Psi Omega, other theatre majors, faculty and staff and community members. Women from age 18 to 85 will participate.

“The Vagina Monologues” celebrates womanhood in all its forms, and has played to packed houses across the country for the last 10 years.

When Tarleton produced the show in 2003, more than 40 women participated in two sold-out performances, which raised more than $2,750 for Cross Timbers Family Services.

Funds raised from the two performances will be donated to local efforts to fight violence against women and girls.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Dr. Don Cawthon was recently voted as the president of the American Association of State Colleges of Agriculture and Renewable Resources (AASCARR) for the 2008-2009 year at the organization’s annual conference held at Murray State University in Kentucky.

Cawthon is the dean of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences at Tarleton State University and resident director of The Texas A&M System AgriLife Research and Extension Center in Stephenville.

Cawthon has a bachelor’s in horticulture, master’s in horticultural food science and doctorate in food science. He has received state, regional and national awards for research such as the Krezdorn Award for Excellence in Doctoral Research, the Joseph Harvey Gourley Award for Excellence in Research and the Texas Governor”s Environmental Excellence Award for Agriculture.

Cawthon joined as a member of AASCARR in 1989 and has served on its board of directors for three terms, chaired the membership committee and served on the legislative affairs committee.

As president, Cawthon will supervise meetings and direct matters concerning the association’s business, be responsible for contact with other professional organizations and appoint members to fill vacant offices until the next annual meeting.

AASCARR is composed of almost 50 state colleges and public non-land grant universities. Their goal is to create an organization of publicly supported colleges and universities offering baccalaureate degree programs in agriculture, renewable natural resources and related disciplines.

The organization provides career advising and mentoring as well as extracurricular clubs, activities and intercollegiate teams to help develop professional leadership skills in graduates.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS- Tarleton State University’s Staff Council is looking for vendors to bring unique items to its 15th annual arts and crafts showcase. The yearly event enables vendors to sell to many people—all in one place.

Staff Council is looking for crafts that will make great gifts. Last year, the ballroom was filled with almost 70 vendor tables with items including: Christmas decorations, jewelry, artwork, homemade food and much more.

“Staff Council offers an opportunity for crafters and artists to showcase their wares for purchase in a climate-controlled, well-lit, comfortable location with a large buying audience on site,” said Susan Gordon, Staff Council member. “Students, faculty and staff love the opportunity to pick up holiday gifts on campus.”

Vendor tables are $35 each. Profits from the fees will go into the Staff Council Employee Scholarship fund. Each vendor also needs to bring a $25 door prize. Shoppers will fill out a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of the door prizes.

This event invites people of all ages and interests to save time and money by shopping for unique gifts at local vendor tables.

The showcase will be held Fri., Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Tarleton’s Barry B. Thompson Student Center ballrooms.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Three out of 50 in a national contest isn’t bad. In fact, it’s great.

Three Tarleton State University singers—Allison Kelley, Erin Standifer and LaKrecia Bean—were selected through a national audition to be members of the 2009 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) College and University Honor Chamber Choir.

Singers from across the United States auditioned for the group, but only 50 were selected. Tarleton singers represent 30 percent of the total number of singers (nine) selected from Texas.

“I am extremely proud of these students, their voice teachers and our entire music faculty as these three fine singers represent us in superb fashion at the national ACDA Convention in Oklahoma City in March 2009,” said Dr. Chuck Rives, director of choirs at Tarleton. “It is clear that the high level of vocal instruction given by Dr. Liz Wade and Mrs. Heather Hawk helped prepare these students to be competitive at the national level.”

Allison Kelley is a sophomore music education major from Stephenville. She sings soprano, and said her love of music goes back to her early childhood.

“For as far back as I can remember music has been a part of my life,” she said. “My dad is a musician—a retired band director from Stephenville.”

Kelley started singing in the high school choir her junior year, which is when she became serious about pursuing music as a career. She was a member of the Texas All-State Choir her senior year at Stephenville High School.

She took some time off after graduation to begin a family, but now is pursuing her musical career fulltime. Her love of music—classical opera in particular—has been passed down to her daughter.

“It must be in my blood because my 6-year-old daughter loves it,” Kelley said. “She was singing before she was talking.”

Erin Standifer is a junior music performance major from Bedford, Texas. She also sings soprano.

“I am really excited about being selected for the choir,” she said.

Standifer has a love for musical theater in particular and would like to perform and teach voice lessons after graduation. She, too, started at a young age in music.

“I started piano in second grade,” she said. “I started choir in fourth grade and then in junior high I was in band and choir. In high school, I concentrated on choir.”

LaKrecia Bean, who sings alto, is an English major from Garland, Texas, pursuing a minor in music. She hopes to become at teacher and eventually teach at the collegiate level.

“I feel really excited about it,” she said of being selected for the choir. “I wanted to try and wanted to do it and see if I could make the choir. I love to sing in the choral style. I can’t wait to go and meet up with other people from other schools and be with other singers.”

Bean has been singing since she was a child and became serious about her singing in high school. Her favorite kind of music to sing is contemporary Christian music with classical music and opera a close second.

The Tarleton singers will perform March 4-7 with the National Honor Chamber Choir, which will be under the direction of Gary Graden.

Graden studied at Clark University, the Hartt School of Music, the Aspen Summer Music Festival and the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm under Eric Ericson.
Graden is choral director at St. Jacob’s Church in Stockholm, Sweden. He has been on the faculty of Stockholm’s Musikgymnasium, where he founded and conducted the Stockholm Musikgymnasiums Chamber Choir. With this choir and the St. Jacob’s Chamber Choir, he has won grand prizes and first prizes in several of Europe’s most prestigious competitions.

His work as conductor and singer is documented on a long list of CD and radio recordings. He has taught conducting, held master classes and conducted professional choir around the world. He is the recipient of the “Johannes Norrby Medal” for his contribution to Swedish choral music. He was elected Sweden’s 2005 Choral Conductor of the Year.

KILLEEN–Tarleton State University-Central Texas had four student winners at the Texas A&M 6th Annual Pathways Student Research Symposium, held November 7-8 at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students from nine Texas A&M University System institutions participated in the competition.

Individually, awards are given to the top presentations in each of three categories. These categories include poster presentations from undergraduate and graduate students.

In the Business & CIS Master’s category, Carlos Sepulveda placed first. His research project was “A Model Predicting Intention to Enroll in Higher Education: An Analysis of the Factors Impacting Retention among Undergraduate and Graduate Students at Tarleton State University-Central Texas.”

In the Business & CIS Undergraduate category, Laura Bruneau, Amber Parris and Keri McGregor placed second with their research project, “A Statistical Model of the Predictors of Performance Excellence in City Management.”

Dr. Laura Matherly, Tarleton-Central Texas Assistant Professor of Management, Marketing and Administrative Systems, was the faculty mentor for all the winners. They will all be recognized at a reception at Tarleton-Central Texas on December 4.

THURBER, TEXAS—Many Texans may not realize that the Bonnie and Clyde Suite of the Stockyards Hotel in Fort Worth displays writings by the infamous Bonnie Parker along with one of her pistols or that Teddy Roosevelt recruited some of his Rough Riders at the Menger Hotel bar in San Antonio.

Fortunately for those wanting to add more adventures to their Lone Star vacations, Tarleton State University’s W.K. Gordon Center for the Industrial History of Texas at Thurber is hosting a free program on Sun., Oct. 19, at 2:30 p.m. The program will feature Liz Carmack, author of “Historic Hotels of Texas: A Traveler’s Guide.”

Carmack decided to write her travel guide because none of its kind existed and she enjoyed the refreshing individuality of older hotels and their stories. She traveled more than 17,000 miles to visit the 64 hotels featured in her book.

While at the Von Minden Hotel in Schulenburg, a self-described “medium” helped her pick out a room with the least amount of supernatural activity. At the 14-story deserted Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells, she took a three-hour tour by flashlight.

During the presentation, Carmack will discuss practical tips for planning trips to historic hotels, specifically those in this region. Her travel articles have appeared in “Texas Highways,” “Austin Woman”, and “Heritage” magazines. A book signing will follow the presentation and copies of the guide will be available for purchase in the museum’s gift shop.

The Gordon Center is a museum and research facility located about halfway between Fort Worth and Abilene at exit 367 on Interstate 20. The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on Monday. For more information, call (254) 968-1886.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Jacque Tanton, of Granbury, Texas, recently provided Tarleton State University with a generous donation that will benefit incoming freshman students from Granbury and Dublin high schools who major in an agricultural related field.

“It was a very generous donation,” said Sabra Vickery-Guerra, director of the university development office. “It allowed us to award two scholarships for the school year immediately following her gift.”

Students in the aforementioned high schools may contact their counselors for information on how to apply for the scholarship.

“As far as I know, her only tie to Tarleton is that she travels through Stephenville on her way to her Dublin ranch,” Guerra said. “Thankfully, she feels strongly enough about higher education to give a gift to Tarleton that benefits students from high schools in counties where she owns land.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Science Planetarium is pleased to offer, again this year, the show “Season of Light” in celebration of the Christmas season. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Thursday show times are on Dec. 11 and 18 at 4 p.m. Saturday show times are on Dec. 6, 13 and 20 at 4 p.m.

“This show is a perennial favorite,” said Larry D. Barr, Planetarium manager. “It’s become a holiday tradition for folks here in Erath County who come back every year to enjoy it.”

“Season of Light” traces holiday customs from around the world and explores how the cold, winter season has come to hold some of the warmest traditions of the year. The program is narrated by National Public Radio’s Noah Adams and looks at the traditions of the Yule log, Christmas tree lights, the Menorah and luminaries. Ancient customs from the Romans to the Celts and Native Americans are presented, along with an astronomical explanation of the winter solstice and a discussion of the Star of Bethlehem.

St. Nicholas, Sinterklaas, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas and Santa Claus are all part of the program that follows both the sacred and secular progressions of the Christmas holiday from ancient time to the present day.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Boston will meet Tarleton State University onstage for a night of music.

World-class musician Douglas Yeo, principal bass trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will perform with Tarleton’s Wind Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. on March 4 in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

Yeo has been a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1985. He also has been involved extensively in teaching, serving on the faculty of New England Conservatory of Music.

Yeo has written more than 30 articles on the trombone and orchestral playing for numerous publications including “The International Musician,” “The Instrumentalist” and “The Brass Herald.” He has become a leading exponent of historical brasses, having played as soloist, in chamber ensembles and in orchestras.

The program includes Gordon Langford’s “Proclamation” for bass trombone and wind ensemble, Robert Spittal’s “Pacem — A Hymn for Peace,” John Philip Sousa’s “The Black Horse Troop” and Yo Goto’s “Funiculi, Funicula Rhapsody.”

The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Reginald M. Houze, interim assistant professor and director of bands. Jonathan Hooper, who recently retired as director of bands at Tarleton after 25 years, will step up to the podium during the concert to guest conduct. Richard L. Bahner, Tarleton’s associate director of bands, also will guest conduct.

A “Meet the Artists” reception will follow the performance.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The Tarleton State Strings, a community and student ensemble, will perform in concert on Thursday, April 9.

The event is at 7:30 p.m. in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium. Admission is free.

The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Paul Bonneau, who also is the music director of the Flower Mound Symphony.

“This is very exciting because we continue to expand the size and repertoire of the TSS that was founded in 2007,” Bonneau said. “The support shown by the Stephenville area community, faculty and students of Tarleton have allowed for continued growth and development of this orchestra.”

Featured piano soloist is Tarleton Assistant Professor Leslie Spotz, who will perform Mozart’s “Piano Concerto in D minor.” The concert will include the ever-popular Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony” and Gabriel Fauré’s “Pavane.”

The Tarleton Strings was founded in January 2007 by Tarleton student Sarah Isbell with the help of Spotz and Dr. Teresa Davidian, head of the fine arts department. Prior to that, there had not been a string ensemble based in Stephenville since 1948.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Teachers were given a one-question pop quiz during the final workshop in the Jim Boyd Effective Schools Project (ESP) development series at Tarleton State University on Feb. 19.

The question was “Why am I a teacher?”

Presenter John Perricone, a high school health teacher, a sixth-degree black belt and a barbershop quartet singer, posed the question in his presentation titled “Why Am I A Teacher? Developing a Philosophical Identity.” ¬

The leadership development conferences feature speakers most school districts would not be able to afford on their own. Featured speakers focus on the latest education techniques, practices or strategies designed to increase classroom learning and improve educators within their classrooms. 


Most of Perricone’s presentation was based on his book, “Zen and The Art of Public School Teaching,” which focuses on two assumptions.

According to Perricone’s Web site, those assumptions are that teachers teach who they are and the second is that a person’s philosophy of life is tied to a person’s identity. Taking these assumptions, Perricone concludes that teachers’ “philosophical identity” ultimately dictates their teaching style and distinguishes those who love and hate teaching.

The book is written for those beginning their teaching careers, for veteran teachers open to personal and professional growth and those thinking about becoming teachers.

ESP is a collaborative professional development program involving Tarleton and public schools within its service area. Since it began more than 20 years ago, ESP has become one of the nation’s long-running school-improvement programs. It is also one of the most unique education partnerships in Texas, possibly the United States. 



The membership of ESP consists of principals and faculty representing 75 schools in 27 districts from the Tarleton service area. Each school pays a membership fee, and the funds are combined to provide workshops by highly qualified, nationally recognized educators, according to Dr. Bill Larmer, professor in Tarleton’s College of Education and director of the ESP.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved tenure for eight Tarleton State University faculty members during its meeting held March 26-27. Tenure for these faculty members will go into effect Sept. 1.

The following were approved for tenure.

Dr. Kimberly A. Bellah, from the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences (COAHS), received her bachelor’s degree in agricultural science and a master’s degree in agriculture from California Polytechnic State University–San Luis Obispo. She received her doctorate in agricultural education and communication from the University of Florida. Before coming to Tarleton in 2006, Bellah taught on both the high school and college levels and served as the professional development coordinator for agricultural education in the state of California. Bellah serves as a member of the graduate faculty, undergraduate adviser, Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow club adviser and the Residential College faculty member for COAHS. She is known for engaging her students in developing their own scholarly contributions, some of which have been published in the NACTA (North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture) Journal.

Dr. Rusty Freed, an assistant professor in the College of Business Administration, earned a bachelor’s degree in general business and management and a master’s in management/human resource management from Tarleton. He received his doctorate in applied technology and performance improvement with a concentration in human resource development from the University of North Texas. Prior to coming to Tarleton in 1986, he worked as an adjunct at Weatherford College, in the Human Resource Management Department for the City of Richardson, Texas, and as an administrator for Tarleton’s Small Business Development Center. Freed has taught in the management and marketing department and was named department head in June 2008. He is a graduate faculty member and has received several teaching awards, including multiple inclusions in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and the O.A. Grant Excellence in Teaching Award.

Three individuals from the College of Education were approved for tenure.

Dr. Melissa Becker received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Howard Payne University, master”s degree in family life studies from University of Southern Mississippi and doctorate in curriculum and instruction from Baylor University. She went on to teach at the university level and, in 2004, accepted the position of coordinator of Tarleton’s TMATE-FWISD program, which is a graduate program for students seeking teacher certification in Fort Worth. From 2005 to 2008, Becker served as Tarleton’s first coordinator for Instructional Technology Faculty Training. She currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses for the curriculum and instruction department. Becker is regularly funded for teaching improvement and presents at the national and state teacher conferences. She has a lengthy publication record in refereed publications and has supported a research agenda with grants funded from state and national resources.

Dr. Diane Sopko earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Houston and master’s in elementary education from Sam Houston State University. She completed her doctorate degree in curriculum and instruction at Texas A&M University. Before coming to Tarleton, Sopko taught in urban and rural public school districts and served as an assistant professor in curriculum and instruction at the University of Memphis. At Tarleton, Sopko has worked as an instructor in the TMATE-FWISD program and has taught a number of courses. She has also served as the chair for 12 graduate students’ research projects and served on the committees of many others. She has published in both national and regional scholarly journals. She has also presented at national and regional conferences and served on a number of departmental, college and university committees.

Dr. Danna M. Beaty has a bachelor’s degree in history and English from East Texas State University, master’s degree in library information science and adoctorate in educational administration—both from Texas A&M University-Commerce. Prior to coming to Tarleton in 2005, Beaty worked as a Texas public school educator and as an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at Texas A&M-Commerce. Beaty is a member of the graduate faculty and College of Education Curriculum Committee and also serves as a department representative on the Graduate Council. She is an active member of a national taskforce focused on the evaluation of leadership preparation programs. In addition to these services, she actively engages in research centered on the superintendency, gender and equity issues and the evaluation of leadership preparation programs. She has published these studies in several scholarly journals.

Two individuals from the College of Liberal and Fine Arts were recommended for tenure.

Dr. Greg Atkinson received a bachelor’s degree with a specialization in geography from Trent University, master’s degree with a specialization in geography from Wilfrid Laurier University and a doctorate with a specialization in geography from the University of Waterloo. Prior to coming to Tarleton State University in 2001, Atkinson was an instructor for three years for both the University of Waterloo and Trent University. He currently serves on several university and college-level committees and is involved with several regional, national and international professional geographic and geographic education associations such as the Southwestern Association of American Geographers (SWAAG), the Association of American Geographers and the Canadian Association of Geographers. Recently, Atkinson was nominated by the SWAAG executive to serve as its national representative for Stand Alone Geographers. Additionally, Atkinson continues to research elements associated with regional settlement systems, particularly the economic role of “small towns” in association among themselves and with larger cities.

Dr. Carol Key received her bachelor’s in psychology and master’s in sociology from the University of Louisville. She received her doctorate in sociology from the University of North Texas. Prior to coming to Tarleton in 2002, Key worked on the Point Placencia Archaeological Project in Belize; served as crew chief, laboratory director, co-director and principle investigator of Placencia and Sein Bight Villages in Belize for seven years; taught for six years with Collin County Community College; and taught as an adjunct with the University of Texas-Arlington and Texas Women’s University. While at Tarleton, Key has taught field courses through the Study Abroad Program. She has been published in many international journals and was invited to write a chapter in “Communication, Modernization and Development” published in New Delhi, India. In 2006, Key received A National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study ancient and contemporary Maya in Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.

The final individual approved for tenure comes from the College of Science and Technology.

Dr. George Mollick received his bachelor’s in industrial technology from Tarleton, master’s in technology education from Ball State University and doctorate in supervision, curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M University-Commerce. Prior to coming to Tarleton, Mollick taught two years in public schools in Washington State. In fall 1998, Mollick was appointed as an instructor in Tarleton’s Department of Industrial Technology (now Engineering Technology). Mollick has published curriculum guides in technology education for the International Education Technology Association Press and has published articles in nontraditional student assessment. He has also worked on the state level to set standards for public school teacher certification. For the last three years, Mollick has served as director of the Center for Instructional Technology and Distributed Education at Tarleton. This department supports all technology at Tarleton and its satellite campuses as well as supporting learning environments including online, ITV, classrooms and computers labs.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s spring commencement ceremony for graduate and undergraduate students will be held May 9 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Stadium. Students must be there at 6 p.m. to check in, which will be held at the north end of the football field.

Tickets will not be used for the spring ceremony, so anyone may attend.

Rehearsal for graduation will be held May 8 at 3 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. All students participating in the graduation ceremonies must attend the rehearsal.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The Tarleton State University College of Graduate Studies and University Testing is offering a “Preparing to take the GRE” workshop on Feb. 21 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hickman Building at the university’s Fort Worth Campus off Camp Bowie.

Rodeo participants will compete in events such as pole bending, stick horse barrel racing, dummy roping and a farm animal petting zoo.

Participants in the last TREAT rodeo held on April 15 came from many area schools including Weatherford, Mineral Wells, Dublin, Comanche, Stephenville, Hamilton, Hico, Granbury, Glen Rose and the Happy Hills Farm in Glen Rose.

TREAT is a therapeutic riding program that allows people with special needs to challenge themselves both physically and emotionally. The program also provides training for Tarleton students studying animal sciences, nursing, physical education and special education.

“The changes we see in some participants are phenomenal, ranging from improvements in mobility to improvement in social interactions at home and at school,” said TREAT Director David Snyder. “The changes brought about in the college students who work with TREAT participants are equally impressive.”

When Snyder came to Tarleton in 1993, the university didn’t offer any equine-assisted activities. Now, of the 43 therapeutic riding programs in Texas, TREAT is one of the 16 considered by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association to be a Premier Accredited Center.

“TREAT’s Special Kids Rodeos provide the opportunity for many more kids and college students to experience the benefits of therapeutic riding,” Snyder said.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—A Tarleton State University student teacher from Lago Vista received the Robert H. Elliott Memorial Award for Outstanding Practicum in Teaching at the annual “Reflections” ceremony on Dec. 5.

The ceremony is designed to honor Tarleton’s student teachers and highlight their most memorable moments throughout the school year.

Nicole Kunze was chosen as the recipient of the Elliott Award, which recognizes student teachers who demonstrate outstanding qualities in the classroom.

Kunze taught kindergarten at Central Elementary School in the Stephenville Independent School District (ISD) under the supervision of teacher Becky Thomas.

“Nicole is well prepared, flexible, very capable and professional in the classroom,” Thomas said. “Nicole strives to build a relationship with her students. She clearly explains her expectations for model behavior and implements many redirecting strategies when needed.”

As part of the award, Kunze also was recognized for her concern about continued professional growth.

“Nicole shows a lot of interest in observing other teachers and their methods of teaching,” Thomas said. “She gleans many new things from those around her, and she is always open to suggestions and to looking for problem solving techniques as well as new materials to aid her in her future classroom.”

The award’s namesake, Robert H. Elliott, taught in Tarleton’s education and psychology department from 1981 to his death in 1990. During that time, Elliott became head of the university’s student teacher program.

The award was developed by friends and colleagues in memory of the veteran educator’s enthusiasm for education and devotion to his students.

Elliot shared a keen interest in the accomplishments of interns, recognizing practicum in teaching as the most important event in the professional development of young teachers.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The talent of Tarleton State University art students is now on display in the gallery of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.

The annual Spring 2009 Student Art Show features art students who are enrolled in Design I, Drawing II, Introduction to Digital Graphic, Painting Studio and Sculpture Studio.

The show includes artwork produced in a variety of media including painting, pens, ceramic sculpture, charcoal and pencils. The exhibition not only reflects the imagination and skill of art students, but also the diversity of Tarleton’s art program.

The show runs through April 27. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is free and open to the public. A reception honoring the artists will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, at the gallery.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—On the heels of a successful spring event, the Friends of the Tarleton State University Dick Smith Library and Friends of the Stephenville Public Library will host a second Spirits of Erath Cemetery Walk at Stephenville’s West End Cemetery on Sun., Nov. 2.

Beginning at 2 p.m., visitors will divide into groups and tour with costumed community members and students through the oldest part of the cemetery. Those attending will hear the history of Stephenville and the area through the ‘voices’ of our memorable ancestors.

More community members will be portrayed than were last spring. Included are Sheriff Tut Hume and his wife Marzee, John and Harriet Lucas, Brinkie Trewitt, Terrell Bryan, Austin King, Bernie Connally, Sallie Mothershead, Daisy Dipper, Susie Hyman, Alwilda Johnson, Amanda Skipper and Pearl Wylie Cage. Scripts and costumes are provided through the efforts of the Tarleton theater department.

Limited parking is available at the Knights of Columbus parking lot and ample parking is available in the cemetery through the Swan Street entrance.

Admission is $5. Proceeds benefit the Friends of the Stephenville Public Library and Friends of the Dick Smith Library.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—One of the hippest jazz combos is returning to Tarleton State University to perform for one night only.

The Bertha Coolidge Jazz Group will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Theater.

The dynamic quartet, which is described as “Texas garage jazz,” plays music that is exciting, humorous, surprising and always fun, according to Greg Ball, assistant professor and assistant director of bands, who specializes in woodwinds and jazz studies at Tarleton.

The group consists of Aden Bubeck on electric and acoustic basses, Rich Stitzel on drums, Paul Metzger on guitar and Joe Carter on vibes and organ.

Carter is a former Tarleton faculty member who taught percussion from 2000-03. He now teaches at Texas Christian University and is a busy freelance player in the Metroplex. Bubeck tours with Grammy winner Miranda Lambert, but is off the road for a short time. Stitzel lives in Chicago and plays around the country. Metzger lives in the Denton area, teaches and plays all over the Metroplex.

This will be the third appearance of the group at Tarleton. They appeared on stage during the 2003 Tarleton Jazz Festival. The band only plays together rarely and is reunited now because Stitzel is in town to play at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. They have been playing gigs in the area and are working on a new CD.

The concert is sponsored by ULTRA Club. Admission is free.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University is hosting a special event for those who love the sound of the strings.

The Carpe Diem String Quartet will return to Tarleton’s Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Theater to perform at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 26.

Admission to the concert, which will feature Hungarian and Czech chamber music, is $5. Tarleton students, faculty and staff are admitted free with Texan ID cards.

The program includes Dvorak’s Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81, which will be performed by the quartet and pianist Dr. Leslie Spotz, assistant professor of piano at Tarleton. Dohnanyi’s Quartet No. 3 in A minor, Op. 33 and Hungarian Dances of Johannes Brahms will round out the evening.

Spotz enjoys a national and international solo career that has included performances at the Tchaikovsky Hall of Moscow University, the South Bank Center of London, Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, the inaugural opening of Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center, as well as several tours in Germany.

“Carpe Diem String Quartet performed here before in January 2007,” Spotz said. “They were so well received then, and I am particularly thrilled that this illustrious group is able to return this January.”

Carpe Diem consists of violinists Charles Wetherbee and John Ewing, violist Korine Fujiwara and cellist Diego Fainguersch. Together, these talented musicians have formed a premier chamber ensemble.

Currently in residence at Ohio Wesleyan University, the quartet has captured the imagination of audiences, the respect of critics and is becoming one of the most versatile ensembles of its generation.

This season, Carpe Diem continues several ambitious projects including the complete recordings of the nine string quartets of Sergey Taneyev on the Naxos label, collaboration with Columbus Dance Theater and a joint project “The String Machine,” which aired on WOSU-PBS television through 2007-08.

Founding members Wetherbee, Fujiwara, along with Ewing and Fainguersch, who both joined the group in 2008, each hold an impressive resume as chamber musicians, garnering acclaim from critics around the world.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University and Temple College will combine their musical talents in a concert on Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

Tarleton’s Chamber Choir, Temple College Choir, Temple Symphony Chorale, along with the Academie Musique’s Cantate and Jubilate children’s choirs (both from Temple, Texas) will perform John Rutter’s “Mass of the Children.”

Tickets to the event are $5 for the general public. Tarleton faculty, staff and students are admitted free with their Texan ID cards. Tickets will go on sale at 6:30 p.m. and the doors will open at 7 p.m.

The Tarleton Chamber Choir and Temple College choirs will perform separately on the program, as well.

The Temple choirs will perform are “Walk Together Children” and “I am His Child” by Moses Hogan. The Tarleton Chamber Choir will sing “Dieu, Qui La Fait Bon Regarder!” by Claude Debussy and “Lamentations of Jeremiah” by Z. Randall Stroope.

“We are very excited about hosting the Temple College Choir, Symphony Chorale and the Academie Children’s Choirs for this concert, said Dr. Chuck Rives, director of choirs. “The Rutter ‘Mass of the Children’ is a 35-minute work that will be an inspiration to all who attend.”

Tarleton State University President F. Dominic Dottavio and Dr. Koy Floyd, vice president of institutional advancement, met last week (Feb. 20) to discuss how President Obama’s stimulus plan could impact Tarleton. Below are some of the questions posed and President Dottavio’s answers.

l. What are the implications of the economic stimulus bill for higher education in general and Tarleton specifically?

It is my understanding that the bill contains provisions for state budgeting shortfalls, financial aid, tax credits, research lab construction, repair and renovation projects, scientific and energy research projects, teacher education programs, adult education and job training.

Taken as a whole, the stimulus bill could have an enormous impact on higher education. As far as Tarleton is concerned, we are awaiting direction from the Governor’s office, since he has not determined the extent to which Texas will participate. Once that information is shared and direction is given from the Texas A&M Chancellor’s office, we will analyze specifically how the total bill will affect our programs.

2. The bill includes funds to increase financial aid for students through increased Pell Grants. How will that affect Tarleton students?

We don’t know exactly what the total effect will be; however, the bill provides $17.1 billion nationally for Pell Grants and increases the maximum available by $500 for each student. Tarleton’s Pell Grant awards for the current year will exceed $8.5 million with 2,695 students receiving assistance. If these figures hold, we should realize a $1,347,500 increase for our students.

Presently, the maximum Pell Grant limit a student in any university in the nation can receive is $4,731 and it varies down to $890 based on need. As I understand the bill, the new maximum would be at or near $5,231.

3. Are there other student aid programs included in the stimulus bill that will benefit students at Tarleton?

The bill includes an increase of $200 million for the nationwide College Work Study program. We have 85 students that are part of our College Work Study program and our annual pay roll is $250,000. At this time we can’t predict exactly how the stimulus package will impact Tarleton students on the College Work Study program but it will be minimal.

4. Does the stimulus bill contain funds to supplement shortfalls and/or substitute for anticipated tuition aid increases?

The bill provides $39.5 billion for K thru 16 public schools and universities for “backfilling” of state budget cuts. It can be used to replace state funds that were unrealized during the current year, and for FY 10 and FY 11. At this time I don’t know the exact breakdown between K-12 and Higher Education, but I anticipate we will realize some assistance to help hold the line on tuition and related expenses.

5. Does the stimulus bill contain funds for renovation, modernization, new construction and educational research projects?

Facilities modernization is included in the $39.5 billion mentioned earlier. An additional $6 billion is included for energy efficiency upgrades. We have a number of building renovation and modernization projects in Stephenville and Granbury that could be positively impacted. We’ll have to wait and see if we benefit.

At the present time we have two major construction projects that would qualify for support.
Both are designed for maximum efficiency to insure minimal environmental impact. Both projects are “spade ready.” Construction of a new $24.3 million Nursing Building and an $11.1 million state-of-the-art Regional Dairy Research Center is scheduled to begin soon. (Groundbreaking for the dairy is scheduled for Feb. 27.)

The bill also provides $8.8 billion to award for “high priority” needs, which include education. We are hopeful to receive funds to address a number of “high priority” projects such as our outreach programs in Fort Worth, Waco, Killeen and Abilene.

Finally, the bill includes $180 million for competitive grants for research buildings. We have a long-standing request to create a research center and we hope to benefit, but the competition will be stiff.

Tarleton State University-Central Texas’ spring break will be observed the week of March 16-20.

These dates differ from what is printed in the Tarleton catalog. The Central Texas campus spring break dates have changed in response to student and community need, since local public schools will observe their spring breaks the same dates.

No classes will be in session March 16-20, and university business offices will be closed March 19-20. Classes will resume and offices will reopen Monday, March 23.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Grab your dancing shoes and partner for a night of glitz and glam at the annual ULTRA Big Band Dance. “Big Band Goes Texan” is the theme for this year’s event.

The dance, hosted by Tarleton State University’s fine arts department, will be at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 3, in the Barry B. Thompson Student Center ballrooms.

The ULTRA Club Big Band is under the direction of Greg Ball, Tarleton’s director of jazz studies. Ball and the band, which are dedicated to carrying on the great American jazz and swing traditions, will perform arrangements from big band greats like Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Scholarship.

Tickets can be purchased in advance in Room 105E of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets also will be available at the door. General admission is $15 for adults and $8 for students with a Texan ID card.

GRANBURY, TEXAS—Tarleton State University has the perfect opportunity for writers interested in growing, networking and marketing their works.

Writing Down the Brazos will be held on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28, at Tarleton’s Dora Lee Langdon Center in Granbury.

The conference focuses on skills writers need to get published. Author Bettina Restrepo attended last year’s conference and encourages other writers to attend.

“I was already published, but it’s essential to keep growing as a writer,” she said. “The craft doesn’t change, but I always hear something different that inspires me.”

Since the conference, Restrepo has published with Boy’s Life, Frisco Style, Texas Co-op Power and signed with Dunham Literary. She has a book deal in the works for a young adult novel.

The workshop, sponsored by the Langdon Center and The Writer’s Bloc of Granbury, will feature six professional writers — Charles Lohrmann, Jennifer Mattson, Steve Sherwood, Larry D. Thomas, Peggy Perser Freeman and Mary Beth Miller.

Lohrmann is the editor of Texas Highways magazine and previously served as managing editor and associate publisher of Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine. His work appeared in Native Peoples, Southwest Art and American Way. Lohrmann wrote “The Language of the Robe: The American Indian Trade Blanket” and contributed a major essay for Chihuly’s Pendletons.

Mattson, with Andrea Brown Literary Agency, has been a children’s bookseller for more than a decade. Her knowledge of the market and extensive experience working with publishers will be a definite asset for her clients. She comes to Andrea Brown Literary Agency after nearly five years of reviewing children’s book as part of the Books for Youth staff of Booklist magazine.

Sherwood has worked as a reporter and editor in Wyoming, a freelance writer in Colorado and a teacher of composition and creative writing in Montana and Texas. His first novel “Hardwater” revolves around the efforts of a newspaper editor in a small Wyoming town to track down a murderer who threatened his son’s life. The novel won the 2003 George Garrett Fiction Prize and was published by the Texas Review Press. He is director of the William L. Adams Center for Writing at Texas Christian University.

Thomas, born and reared in West Texas, has lived in Houston since 1967. In 1998, he retired from a career in adult criminal justice with the Harris County Adult Probation Department. Thomas started writing poetry seriously in the early 1970s during his four-year tour of duty with the U.S. Navy. He wrote consistently on weekends for 31 years and was quite successful in placing his poems in numerous respected national literary journals. Timberline Press published his first collection of poetry, “The Lighthouse Keeper,” in late 2000. He has since published six additional collections of poems.

Freeman is an author, editor and writing teacher who is serving as the conference director. She will monitor a critique session for all who want to read their work to the other attendees. Those interested can submit their manuscript for critique to Freeman at 9106 Bellechase, Granbury, TX 76049 by Feb. 15. Send two copes of no more than 10 pages along with your critique panelist preference.

Miller is the associate director of the conference and is a young adult author who writes contemporary teen novels. Her first novel, “Aimee,” is about a girl recovering from the loss of her best friend to suicide. The novel has connected with teens from as far away as Singapore. Her second novel, “On the Head of a Pine,” from Dutton is out in hardcover.

Early registration fee (before Feb. 21) for the two-day conference is $90. On or after Feb. 22, registration will be $125. For those submitting manuscripts, add $25 to registration fees.

The Langdon Center is located at 308 E. Pearl St. in Granbury—just one block east of the historic downtown square.

Hosted by the Friends of the Dick Smith Library, the event will feature “Historic Hotels of Texas Snow” by Liz Carmack. Her love for heritage travel and desire to provide travelers with a practical reference to Texas’ historical hotels inspired her to write the book.

Carmack traveled more than 20,000 miles across the state and visited more than 60 hotels during her research. She spoke with local historians, innkeepers and hotel guests and tracked down hotel details in archives, libraries and museums.

Carmack earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Oklahoma State University, master’s degree in mass communications from the University of Leicester, Leicester, England, and is a member of the Association for Women in Communications, the Writers’ League of Texas and Freelance Austin.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State Univerity’s Equine Assisted Therapy program (TREAT) recently received a horse trailer and saddle donations from two local citizens.

TREAT received a horse trailer from 62-year-old Barbra McMahan. McMahan attends TREAT sessions regularly and donated the horse trailer after losing her horse.

“For people like Barbra, the exercise with maximum movement with the horse helps maintain mobility and rehabilitation from a stroke,” aid Dr. David Snyder, professor in animal science and TREAT coordinator.

Marty Yates, a 15-year-old from Stephenville, donated one of his trophy saddles to the TREAT program, as well. Snyder said Marty had been contacting him for months wanting to donate his saddle to the program.

The TREAT program is an opportunity for individuals who have critical disabilities to work their muscles and aid rehabilitation. Equine therapy can help with disabilities including: autism, cerebral palsy, attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, scoliosis, strokes and many others.

TREAT operates mostly on donations from generous people in the community. Previous donations have included: money, volunteer hours, riding equipment, horses and more.

“Our funds look good today, but we always can use more donations,” Snyder said. “Horses always have to eat and we have a continual need for support.”

People from all ages, anywhere from age 2 to 70, come for a 30-minute horse ride around the Tarleton farm and horseback games in the indoor arena. Sessions are on Monday and Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. There is a $10 fee, but need-based scholarships are available.

Tarleton students and volunteers assist with the program.

“Students get as much out of the program as riders do,” Snyder said.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Teaching and learning strategies and the human brain were the focus of the second workshop in the Jim Boyd Effective Schools Project (ESP) development series at Tarleton State University on Nov. 19.

LeAnn Nickelsen, a published author and certified brain research trainer, addressed an audience of more than 300, including 184 public school educators, 115 Tarleton student teachers and 10 Tarleton faculty members.

The leadership development conferences feature speakers most school districts would not be able to afford on their own. Featured speakers focus on the latest education techniques, practices or strategies designed to increase classroom learning and improve educators within their classrooms.

Nickelsen has worked in education since 1993 and has presented hundreds of workshops for thousands of school educators at in districts and educational conference across the country.

Her presentation focused on teaching and learning strategies that are compatible with the way the human brain functions. For example, research indicates traditional methods of instruction such as lecture, note taking, recitation and worksheets are among the least effective in activating those portions of the brain that allow learners to recall and understand information.

According to Nickelsen, students must activate prior learning before attempting to learn new ideas and concepts. New learning must be linked to previous learning.

“The overall response to the presentation was very positive, and I know of at least one third-grade teacher who shared the workshop ideas with her colleagues, and she has taken a lead in developing a language arts unit for all the third grade that incorporates some of the strategies from this workshop,” said Dr. Bill Larmer, professor in Tarleton’s College of Education and director of the ESP.

Upcoming speakers for ESP include:
• Eric Jensen — Jan. 23, 2009 — “Seven Discoveries from Brain Research that Could Revolutionize Education.”
• John Perricone — Feb. 19, 2009 — “Why Am I A Teacher?”

ESP is a collaborative professional development program involving Tarleton and public schools within its service area. Since it began more than 20 years ago, ESP has become one of the nation’s long-running school-improvement programs. It is also one of the most unique education partnerships in Texas, possibly the United States.

According to Larmer, the membership of ESP consists of principals and faculty representing 75 schools in 27 districts from the Tarleton service area. Each school pays a membership fee, and the funds are combined to provide workshops by highly qualified, nationally recognized educators.

In addition to the local service area, school districts participating in the ESP come from Albany, Alvarado, Graham, Killeen, Southlake, Burleson, Lake Worth, Cisco and many more.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s rodeo teams traveled to Odessa, Texas, for the Odessa College rodeo held March 29-30. This was the third of six college rodeos for the spring semester in the Southwest Region.

Once again, Tarleton was well represented throughout the weekend. The team brought back 20 contestants to the short round and acquired points in six of nine events. The women team placed second with 220 total points, falling just behind South Plains College’s 300 points. Tarleton’s men collected 225 points for the weekend, which will go toward the overall standings.

The women’s team dominated the goat tying—collecting all of their team points here. Tarleton had six competing in the short round. They collected 385 points out of a possible 630 for the event, with some points only counting toward individual standings.

Kirby Eppert, College National Finals All-Around Champion, showed her quickness and consistency in the goat tying with times of 7.8 and 7.7 seconds. She placed third in the long round and won both the short round and the average.

Kasey Kramps also made quick runs in the goat tying to win second in the average. Kramp’s time of 7.7 seconds split the first round. Her time of 8.4 seconds placed her third in the short round and put her behind Eppert for the average. Cynda Norrell finished fourth in the long round and the average, while teammate Kaylin Leas finished sixth in the short round and the average.

All-around cowboy Ryle Smith placed in the short round and the average of the steer wrestling. His time of 5.2 seconds in the short round split second, third and fourth and helped him move from 10th to fifth in the average.

Tarleton had four tie-down ropers make the short round. Justin Brashear finished second in the first round with a solid time of 10.1 seconds. Bode Scott placed fifth in the long round, sixth in the short round and sixth in the average. Chad Williams, who’s made the short round in this event at every rodeo this semester, also picked up points in the first round with his time of 10.7 seconds.

Saddle bronc rider Isaac Diaz placed sixth in the long round with his 71-point ride, split fourth in the short round with 73 points and placed fifth in the average.

Tarleton’s Nick Rawlings and partner Kory Bramwell (Ranger College) won the first round of the team roping with a quick time of 4.9 seconds. The duo also placed fourth in the short round and the average. Tarleton team members Keil Rowan and Cole Fincher finished second in the first round and sixth in the average.

Also in the team roping, Tarleton’s Cody Jordan teamed up with his younger brother Brandon Jordan (New Mexico Junior College) to place second in both the short go and the average.

Other Tarleton team members making it to the short round included: Lucas Butler-saddle bronc; Kyle Archino-tie-down roping; Teresa Brevik-breakaway roping, Brandy Sladen and Bailee Switzer-goat tying; Lillian McMullan, Caitlyn Forrest and Ashley Moberg-barrel racing; and Clay Norrel- team roping.

Tarleton’s rodeo teams will next travel to Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas to compete on April 2-4.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Dr. T. Lindsay Baker, director of Tarleton State University’s W.K. Gordon Center in Thurber, recently delivered the keynote address for the regional conference of a national organization for agricultural museums on Feb. 27. The conference took place in Farmers Branch, Texas, for the Mountain Plains meeting of the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums.

Dr. Debra Ann Reid of Eastern Illinois University joined Baker in speaking on “Why This College Professor Loves Living History.” In the presentation, Baker discussed his experiences over the years in first-person “living history” interpretation for the public at museums, parks and historic sites.

Part of the talk dealt with Baker’s experiences at West Texas A&M University, where as a staff member of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum he lived in a recreated sod house/half dugout on the university’s teaching ranch. He resided there for a year and a half—through two winters in the Texas Panhandle—hauling in water by hand and heating with only wood and cow chips as fuel.

“It was the best way I had to understand better what life was like for sodbusters on the agricultural frontier a century ago,” he said.

The Gordon Center is located about halfway between Fort Worth and Abilene at exit 367 on Interstate 20. The Gordon Center is a museum and research facility devoted to the Texas industrial past.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Jazz Ensembles will perform their final concert of the semester at the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center on Thu., Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. “A Night at the Club” will feature Jazz Ensemble II directed by Dr. Cara Pollard and Jazz Ensemble I directed by Greg Ball.
Prior to the event, a pre-concert coffee and dessert soiree will begin at 7 p.m. and be accompanied by student-led jazz combos. Tickets are $5 or free with a Texan ID card. The public is encouraged to attend. Tickets will go on sale at the door at 6:30 p.m.

“We are trying to create a more casual, laid-back atmosphere for the show,” Ball said. “When people see the jazz bands on the same stage that they saw a formal, tuxedo-clad performance the week before, they feel they should be formal with us. We want people to let their hair down, relax and have as much fun as we’re having on stage.”

Those in attendance can expect more subdued lighting, artwork displays and candlelit tables on stage.

Musically, the bands are working on some great charts. The Jazz Ensemble II’s set includes Chuck Mangione’s popular piece, “The Children of Sanchez.” They will also feature faculty member Heather Hawk singing “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.”

Jazz Ensemble I will bring back vocalist Isidro Hulin, who will sing “Woman’s Got Soul.” Other highlights include Arturo Sandoval’s “Funky Cha Cha” and Pat Metheny’s exciting
“First Circle.”

“There will be a little something for everyone—swing, rock, Latin, ballads and more,” Ball said. “We want you dancing in the aisles.”

GRANBURY, TEXAS—The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Granbury is hosting two seminars on the Internet and QuickBooks.

The first seminar, “Hit Send, Get Money,” will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at Tarleton State University’s Langdon Center Concert Hall, located at the corner of Brazos and East Bridge streets in Granbury.

Learn how to harness the power of the Internet to acquire new customers, increase sales and reduce advertising costs in this class.

Pre-registration for the course is $15. The cost at the door is $20 and SBDC clients pay only $10.

The second seminar, “QuickBooks for Beginners,” is a four-hour course broken into two sessions, which will be held on from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 26 and March 5 at Tarleton’s Langdon Center Concert Hall.

QuickBooks is a small business financial software that creates invoices, pays bills and tracks expenses. This course is designed for beginners and will start with the basic QuickBooks setup through setting up accounts and other useful applications.

The cost, which covers both sessions, is $50 or $40 for SBDC clients. Pre-registration is required for this course.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Alpha Chi chapter recently inducted its newest members. Alpha Chi recognizes academic achievement and extends membership to no more than the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors in smaller universities and colleges. It was established in 1922 and now has more than 300 chapters in 45 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Tarleton’s Alpha Chi Chapter was chartered in 1969 and is a member of Region I, which includes the western two-thirds of Texas, as well as New Mexico and Oklahoma.

Tarleton’s chapter is active on the national level and its members have held national offices, served on executive committees and have taken part in the national conventions held every other year. STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Suzy Batiz, national speaker and founder of PooPourri, will speak at the Women’s Leadership Program in Tarleton State University’s Thompson Student Center ballrooms. Her speech, titled “Eyes Wide Open to Opportunity,” will be on March 31 at 6 p.m.

Batiz is the owner of the million-dollar business and believes in empowering women.

She is a devoted consumer of natural products and well researched in aromatherapy. Batiz invented PooPourri in 2007 after being approached by her brother-in-law to find a solution to the stinky bathrooms in the clinic for which he worked. PooPourri is now sold in more than 600 stores.

PooPourri is made of all-natural essential oils and virtually eliminates bathroom odors. The PooPourri traps offending odors under a layer of film and after flushing all that lingers is a pleasant citrus scent.

The program is a new concept for the Stephenville area. The idea was formed by several groups around town: American Association of University Women, Cross Timbers Business and Professional Women’s Club, Stephenville Chamber of Commerce, and Tarleton’s Career Services Center, Center for Diversity Initiatives, Delta Epsilon Iota and Student Leadership programs.

The program will be a motivational and entertaining time of networking and learning for women of all ages. It will also serve all women interested in doing more to ensure success in their career, community and future.

Drinks and food will be provided and door prizes will be given out. It is free for students and $15 for adults. Tickets may be purchased in Stephenville at Pack-n-Mail, Scott’s Flowers or at the door prior to the event.

Tarleton State University-Central Texas is offering scholarships for new students who enroll full-time in the Spring 2009 term.

Students new to the university are eligible for the scholarships, which are $750 each. Only first-time Tarleton-Central Texas students may apply, and both undergraduate and graduate students will be considered. Undergraduates must enroll in least 15 credit hours, and graduate students at least 12 credit hours.

The scholarships are applicable to new students enrolling in any spring term, including the 8- or 16-week sessions. Students may obtain a scholarship application and see complete course schedules at www.tarleton.edu/centraltexas. Completed applications must be submitted to the Tarleton-Central Texas Financial Aid office by January 9, 2009. Spring classes begin January 12.

New students are required to complete applications for admission, then make an appointment with an academic advisor to review degree plans.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—On Jan. 14, Tarleton State University’s campus and surrounding community will have the opportunity to listen to Naomi C. Earp, Chair of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Earp will deliver her speech, titled “The Last Lecture: Diversity and Education,” in the Clyde Wells Fine Arts Building at 1:15 p.m.

Earp has spoken at Tarleton on one previous occasion. On April 23, 2007, she spoke to a standing-room-only audience room about race discrimination and the value of student diversity on campus.

On Aug. 31, 2006, after serving as vice chair of the EEOC since April 28, 2003, Earp was appointed as chair of the commission. She was reappointed to a second term, which expires on July 1, 2010.

Earp brings to the EEOC a broad range of hands-on leadership and management experience. At the National Institutes of Health, she spearheaded the development of a world-class diversity initiative and a nationally recognized Alternative
Dispute Resolution program. At the Department of Agriculture she headed the Equal Opportunity Program, which included minority small businesses and minority farmers. Earp also served as an Attorney Adviser at the EEOC during the mid-1980s.

In addition, she has worked as an independent consultant, providing services to private employers and public agencies on a variety of employment-related issues and programs. She is also actively involved with the Labor and Employment Section of the American Bar Association.

A native of Newport News, Virginia, Earp received her bachelor’s degree from Norfolk University in Norfolk, Virginia; master’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana; and Juris Doctor from Catholic University’s Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. She is a member of the Supreme Court Bar and the Pennsylvania Bar.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s rodeo team kicked off their spring rodeo schedule this past weekend (March 5-7) at Ranger College in Ranger, Texas.

With Ranger College in close driving distance, Tarleton had plenty of help and support. Head rodeo coach Mark Eakin and his family, assistant coaches Raymond Hollabaugh and Tibba Smith, Dr. Wanda Mercer, Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio, Mrs. Dottavio and many Tarleton alumni cheered as the Tarleton rodeo team earned several big wins. Helping in the teams’ successes were the 20 members who made it to the short round Saturday night.

The women’s team gathered 250 points, but ended up second behind Odessa College by only 10 points. The men collected 260 points and ended up third place, behind Western Texas College and Howard College.

Ryle Smith, a senior, had a rewarding weekend. Smith took home the prestigious all-around cowboy award by beating his team roping partner and fellow teammate Chad Williams by only 20 points.

Smith, a College National Finals Rodeo qualifier and strong three-event cowboy, made the short round in both tie-down roping and team roping. Smith made an outstanding run on a fast calf in the short round. His 10.4-second run put him fourth in the round and fourth in the average.

Smith collected the rest of his points in the team roping. Smith and Williams dominated the event. They posted times of 6.6 and 8.6 seconds to finish third in both rounds and win the average.

Also in the team roping, An Justin Briggs heeled for Chase Massengill to win fourth in the short round and fourth in the average.

Caleb Scott won the long round of the tie-down roping with a fast time of 9.1 seconds, but a broken barrier in the short round caused him to drop to sixth in the average. Also placing for Tarleton in the tie-down roping, Williams won fifth in short go and fifth in the average.

For the women’s team, Lindsey Ewing picked up points in barrel racing and breakaway roping. Ewing, currently leading the breakaway roping for the Southwest Region, increased her lead with her consistent roping. She split third and fourth in the short round and split second, third and fourth in the average. Unfortunately after placing second in the long round of the barrel racing, she took a five-second penalty that took her out of the average.

Lillian McMullan made two 16.9-second runs to win third in the short round and third in the average. Also placing in the barrel racing for Tarleton, Fran Surles won fourth in the short round and fourth in the average.

The only Tarleton team member to make the short round in the goat tying was Cyndia Norell. Norell collected 120 points in the goat tying, won second in the long go-round, fourth in the short round and third in the average.

Other Tarleton rodeo team members making the short round included the following: Josh Hudson in bareback, Lena Floyd in barrel racing, Jaytin McWright in team roping, Cody Bell in tie-down roping, Cheyenne Motley in breakaway roping, Brazos Peacock in saddle bronc, Shelby Irick in breakaway, Clay Norell in team roping and Cimarron Thompson in steer wrestling.

The team will next travel to West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas, on March 12-14 for the second rodeo of the spring season.

GRANBURY, TEXAS—Nicholas Wood, associate professor of art at the University of Texas at Arlington, will present his contemporary art—“capsulated…mostly”—at Tarleton State University’s Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Educational Center in Granbury. His showing began on Nov. 10 and will run through Dec. 19 in the historical A.P. Gordon House.

“Capsulated…mostly” is a compilation of drawings, collage and sculpture. Included in the show is an assortment of colorful, sculpted clay capsules and capsule drawings. Also included are “Boxes” collages, “Network,” which is a drawing of many colors with black and white as well as black-and-white drawings of various geometrics in hypnotic combinations.

Wood, multi-media artist, has exhibited his works for more than 30 years on regional, national and international levels. His public art can be seen in Arlington, Dallas and Bad Konigshofen, Germany. Wood is also an independent curator of exhibitions at Arlington Museum of Art.

Wood received his bachelor’s in art and sociology from San Francisco State University and his master’s from New York State College at Alfred University.

The exhibit is open during the week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

The Langdon Center, which is dedicated to promoting the arts and community education in Granbury, is located at 308 E. Pearl Street. For more information on the exhibit or other events at the Langdon Center, call (817) 279-1164.

KILLEEN–Tarleton State University-Central Texas’ Delta Mu Delta (DMD) Honor Society in Business Administration inducted seven new members into its Zeta Lambda Chapter at a ceremony held at the Stonetree Golf Club November 8th.

The new members inducted are: LaTeri Alexander, Sarah Fischbacher, Amandeep Gadok, Michael Hunter, Melinda Myers and Denise Rodda, all of Killeen, and Stacy Steinmetz of Nolanville.

Inductees qualified for this honor based solely on their academic achievement. Undergraduates are required to be in the top 20% of their class and have a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher. Graduate students are required to have completed 21 hours of course work and maintain a GPA of 4.0.

Guest speaker for the event was the Honorable Barbara Weaver, Municipal Judge for the City of Killeen.

Dr. Randall Florey and Dr. Stephen McNett serve as faculty co-advisors for the group.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Mary Kozlovsky, a fifth-grade reading teacher at Grandview Intermediate School, was recently named the 2009 recipient of the Jim Boyd Instructional Leadership Award at Tarleton State University.

Presented each spring through the Effective Schools Project (ESP) in the College of Education, the award recognizes significant professional contributions made by instructional leaders to improve the educational environment in their schools. 


Nominated by their peers, school board members, parents and supervisors, the candidates are evaluated based on effective instruction, professional development, commitment to quality educational experiences and positive community relations.

Kozlovsky, who has been teaching in Grandview ISD for four years, is in her eighth year of teaching.

“She is dedicated to children and will certainly go the extra mile to ensure her students develop not only competencies in the classroom, but also adopt her love and passion for reading,” said Kristi Rhone, principal at Grandview Intermediate School. “I appreciate the fact that Mary will take the time to evaluate her students finding strengths, weaknesses and developing an intense plan to create success for everyone.”

Grandview ISD Assistant Superintendent Karla Whitmire said Kozlovsky is an animated teacher who brings her lessons to life.

“She is able to stimulate both individual and group excellence,” she said. “She is a secure and positive role model for all her students. Parents can rely on Mary to always act in the best interest of their children and maintain communication.

“If I could clone Mary, I would share her with every school in Texas,” Witmire continued.

Brooke Cordell, a Grandview Intermediate student, said Kozlovsky, whom they call “Mrs. Koz” is her favorite teacher.

“Mrs. Koz is one of those teachers who has really sparked my interest of reading and writing,” she said. “She makes every one of her students feel special. And this in turn makes her very special. She always expects the best from us and never settles for anything less than us acting like polite young ladies and gentlemen.”

In her own words, Kozlovsky talks about her love of her students and teaching.

“Their successes, their stories, their excitement and laughter have not only helped to shape the person that I have become but have also provided the fuel I need each day to be the teacher I am,” she said. “When I’m out with family and friends and sharing stories about my students, I’m often asked, ‘Can you ever stop talking about school?’ I’ve come to realize that I don’t think I can because my students have made the difference. They have forever touched my life.”

Other nominees for the teacher excellence award included:
• Kay Bartley, teacher at Crossland Ninth Grade Center in Granbury ISD
• Julie Bennet, second-grade teacher at Houston Elementary in Mineral Wells ISD
• Joyce Pages, instructional specialist at Acton Middle School in Granbury ISD
• Charlotte Pennock, kindergarten teacher at Alvarado Elementary North in Alvarado ISD
• Benny Ramsey, first-grade teacher at Crestview Elementary in Granbury ISD
• Lisa Ross, English teacher and team leader at Alvarado High School in Alvarado ISD

Awarded during the spring ESP conference held on Tarleton’s campus, the Instructional Leadership Award recipients receive a cash stipend and a commemorative rocking chair.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Approximately 1,600 regional FFA high school students attended the Tarleton State University Invitational Leadership and Development Event on Nov. 3. At the event, FFA members were given the opportunity to participate and receive evaluations from Tarleton students.

Current Tarleton students who are future agricultural educators served as event organizers and judges.

“What people have been most excited about is the fact that our students are able to schedule and operate an event like this without relying on faculty,” said Dr. Kyle McGregor, associate professor of agricultural services and development. “This event is completely student led. They start with no budget and no resources. They must reserve rooms, order awards, appoint judges and ensure that the events are conducted smoothly and fairly.”

FFA students compete in various events that include radio, FFA quiz, creed speaking, skills, chapter conducting and agricultural issues. These events allow students to become leaders in their own FFA chapters and give them an opportunity to demonstrate useful skills.

The event also provided Tarleton’s future agricultural teachers with an additional skill set.

“The management and coordination of such an event is something they will do quite a bit of once they become teachers,” McGregor said.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University will host an American Red Cross lifeguard training course at the Tarleton pool on March 20-22.

The course is open to the public and all participants must be 15 years old by the first day of class. It will include training in first aid, CPR and Automated External Defibrillator. After passing the written and physical tests, participants will earn certification in these areas.

Lifeguard and CPR/PR challenges will also be held March 20 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Lifeguard training challenges are $75 and CPR/PR challenges are $50.

The class is limited to 12 people and each person is required to pay the course cost of $160 by Feb. 26. Registration forms are in the Health and P.E. office in Wisdom Gym, and payments may be made through instructor Penny Wright.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Colleges Against Cancer will sponsor a “cancer bash” on April 8 at 6 p.m. in the Thompson Student Center ballrooms.

The Cody Gill Band, 80 Proof Band and 6th Market Boulevard will provide a smoke-free evening of music. Tickets are $5 with a student ID and $10 for others. The public is invited and all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s meats laboratory offers a wide variety of meats, perfect for the upcoming holiday season. Everyone in the community may purchase items from the meats lab.

The meats lab is located on the College Farm Road in Stephenville and open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

With the holiday season arriving, this is a perfect opportunity to find great holiday ham or other meats at a great price and support Tarleton. Other meats offered include beef, pork, roast, sausage and lamb. Meats can be cut to your preference by contacting the lab.

The meat judging team is also hosting a holiday turkey and ham sale. Smoked turkeys weighing about 10 pounds are $35. Twelve-pound, spiral-sliced hams are $40.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Women’s Ensemble and Chamber Choir will perform a “Festive and Fun” evening for its spring concert.

The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 2, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Theater.

Under the direction of Dr. Charles Rives, Tarleton’s director of choirs, the concert will feature a wide variety of choral selections that are challenging and entertaining.

The Women’s Ensemble will open the evening followed by the Chamber Choir. Selections include a festive work, “Alleluia,” for choir and French horn by Paul Bassler featuring Dr. Kim Rooney, adjunct horn instructor at Tarleton. Also featured will be a foot-stomping folk song, “Old Dan Tucker.”

The men of the choir will sing “Betelehemu,” accompanied by African drums and percussion, and the women’s chorus will sing two delightful selections, “Three Little Maids From School,” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Mikado” and Allen Keopke’s “Dance On My Heart.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The United States currently faces a severe shortage of nurses, but Tarleton State University is actively working to alleviate the deficit. Since the start of Tarleton’s nursing, the department has done its part to produce highly trained, qualified professionals.

In fact, nursing enrollment numbers were higher than any other major on campus in fall 2006. By fall 2007, enrollment had increased by 191 percent since 2002.

But these efforts still may not be enough. Tarleton now has more plans in the works to increase nursing enrollment, while continuing to develop the skills students will need to enter the workforce. One of the first steps includes the completion of a $24.3-million facility to accommodate the growing department.

“The new building will provide the space necessary for the nursing program to expand undergraduate enrollment, develop a graduate program and expand research opportunities,” said Dr. Elaine Evans, Tarleton’s nursing director.

Changes in curriculum call for more computers and advanced technology. Blueprints for the 75,000-square foot, three-story structure include classrooms, multimedia rooms, project rooms and a health center. It will also house a state-of-the-art simulation-learning center using realistic nursing equipment to prepare students for a real healthcare environment, which will be a huge improvement from Tarleton’s current nursing building that was constructed in 1953 and served previously as an infirmary and health center.

But along with the improved space, comes the need for a new plan.

“We need to prepare more nurses,” Evans said. “Texas nursing programs must graduate 25,000 new professional nurses per year by 2020 to meet the nursing workforce demands. Tarleton had 60 nursing graduates in 2008. We need to graduate a minimum of 120 per year by 2013. We will be able to double program enrollment from 200 to 400 students when the new nursing building is available, if we have adequate faculty positions.”

Dr. Evans went on to list a few of the program’s priorities.

“We also need to continue to develop student and faculty research initiatives,” Evans said. “We need to initiate a graduate program (master of science in nursing) by the fall of 2011 to prepare nurses for management positions in healthcare agencies and nurses prepared for nursing program faculty positions.

“Next, we should showcase the reputation we have garnered from the satisfaction of employers of our graduates to the wider community—become the destination school for high-ability nursing students and faculty. We need to develop a strong alumni organization and friends of nursing network, and we need to continue to offer continuing education programs for area nurses.”

The department’s innovative new facility and strong priorities set it apart from other nursing schools. The program also focuses on rural healthcare, a challenging issue that has arisen within the field of medicine.

Paula Faulk Maness, an assistant professor in Tarleton’s nursing department, gave a definition of rural nursing.

“Rural nursing at its core is no different than all nursing,” Maness said. “You have to value both the art and science of nursing. Rural nursing is caring for the patient from the cradle to the grave. It is possible for a nurse to care for multiple generations within the same family. It is one of the most accountable forms of nursing. There is no anonymity. You know everyone and everyone knows you. Your patients are your community; they are the people you see at church, in the grocery store, at ball games, at the bank, the filling stations and restaurants.”

According to Evans, Tarleton’s nursing program has a long history of preparing students for such challenges and opportunities.

“The program is distinctive because we have a 32-year history of using rural and community hospitals and other rural healthcare agencies to prepare graduates to professionally and competently care for patients,” Evans said. “Tarleton nursing students have the unique opportunity to manage the care of multiple patients, work several three consecutive 12-hour shits, and practice clinical reasoning skills prior to graduation. Although our graduates are prepared to work in both urban and rural settings, our program has a special emphasis on rural nursing and healthcare because most of our students and faculty live and work in rural areas.”

Tarleton’s program, like the field itself, is constantly evolving.

“Young people are interested in entering nursing,” Evans said. “Our nursing program population reflects ages of the general college population. Approximately nine percent of our student body is men. We hope this percentage will increase in the future.”

Evans says that the nursing program has responded to the needs and expectations of the surrounding communities and hospitals are taking note.

“Our students must be able to care for a minimum of five patients in Senior I nursing courses,” Evans said. “In their final semester, students have the opportunity to function as a professional nurse while under the watchful eye of a nurse preceptor and faculty members. Healthcare agencies comment on how well our graduates are prepared for their first jobs.”

GRANBURY, TEXAS—Like wine, but wish you knew more about it? If so, a great opportunity awaits you at Tarleton State University’s Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Educational Center in Granbury.

The Langdon Center will offer a class titled “Texas Wines” on Nov. 16 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It will be held in the Langdon Center’s Concert Hall. Price for the class is $40 per person (includes wine, hors’ d’oeuvres, dessert and coffee) and is payable in advance or at class time.

The class will feature Ray Raney, who is a certified sommelier as well as president and wine consultant for King’s Liquors in Fort Worth.

Raney will lead the class with a casual and fun approach, while sharing his wealth of knowledge and new ideas. Raney specializes in searching out wines of character and excellence that are also reasonably priced. He will demystify the process and pass his knowledge on to you.

Those in attendance will have the opportunity to sample five different vintages from Texas winemakers.

With holidays around the corner, Texas Wines is the perfect way to get a jumpstart on entertaining with confidence.

The class is just one of a series. It is a collaboration of the Langdon Center and The Pan Handle, a gourmet tool shop, located at 106 N. Crockett St. on Granbury’s historic town square. The next wine class in the series is “German Wines” on Dec. 14.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—A Tarleton State University music student recently was the featured soloist in a national choir.

Erin “Rin” Standifer, a junior music performance major from Bedford, was selected as the soprano soloist for the American Choral Directors Association National Collegiate Honor Choir on March 4-7 in Oklahoma City. She was selected by the ensemble’s conductor, Gary Graden, to sing two solos with the choir through a series of competitive auditions.

“Her performance in the concert was exceptional—one that made all of us at Tarleton State University very proud,” said Dr. Charles Rives, director of choirs at Tarleton. “To be singled out of such a prestigious choir to sing solos at a national event speaks very highly of her hard work and of the preparation she has received as a music major at Tarleton.”

Standifer was one of three Tarleton singers chosen for the 50-member choir. Tarleton singers represented 30 percent of the total number of singers (nine) selected from Texas. Sophomore music education major Allison Kelley of Stephenville and LaKrecia Bean, an English major from Garland, also performed in the choir.

The National Collegiate Honor Choir rehearsals culminated in a performance before more than 3,000 choral directors from across the country and around the world.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Auditions for Tarleton State University’s production of “West Side Story” will be held on Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. and on Nov. 25 at 5 p.m. in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center.

Auditions on Nov. 24 will focus on acting and dance. Cold readings will be provided and people interested must wear clothing and shoes allowing freedom of movement.

Auditions on Nov. 25 will focus on vocal abilities. Each person must prepare 16 measures of an upbeat Broadway-style song with sheet music. Piano accompaniment will be provided.

Potential actors must be 16 years or older to audition and everyone must attend both sessions.

The performance of West Side Story s scheduled for Feb. 25-28, 2009.

STEPHENVILLE, TX–Four of Texas’ most distinguished journalists–John Tackett, Roland Lindsey, James Norman and the late Jerry Flemmons–will be among former Tarleton State University journalism students honored at Oct. 17-18 homecoming festivities.

All four would enjoy award-winning careers as big-city newspapermen, chronicling such events as the John F. Kennedy assassination. All four started as staff members of the GRASSBURR yearbook and/or The J-TAC student newspaper at Tarleton in the 1950s.

Dr. Stuart Chilton, GRASSBURR and J-TAC faculty adviser from 1954-57, was handed the task of gathering the journalism alumni from near and far.

“When we began in November 2007, we only had six addresses of the 102 staff addresses,” Chilton said. ”I cannot take all the credit in finding these former students. It has been a concerted effort from these former staffers and the Alumni Relations Office.”

A large crowd of alumni and family members is anticipated.

“I initially thought we might have 60 persons (staffers, spouses, children, grandchildren) in attendance” Chilton said. “Now, it appears this number might approach 100.”

Flemmons, a Stephenville High School graduate who died in 1999, is arguably the most famous of the quartet.

He made his mark at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram covering the JFK assassination and subsequent Dallas trial of Jack Ruby, who shot presumed Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Flemmons was a pallbearer the day Oswald was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Fort Worth.

Flemmons was the heralded travel editor at the Star-Telegram for a number of years and turned out a best-selling biography of former Star-Telegram publisher Amon Carter Sr.

During his last year on the J-TAC staff, Flemmons wrote a front page column titled “Plowlines.” Those who didn’t read his column at Tarleton may remember him instead as the Tarleton Plowboys’ standout quarterback in the mid-50s.

Flemmons graduated from East Texas State University in 1960 and worked at the Abilene Reporter-News before going to the Star-Telegram. Appropriately, he returned to the Tarleton fold serving as the institution’s first writer-in-residence, a position he held for four years before his death.

“I had the privilege of getting to know Jerry when he was appointed writer-in-residence and occupied an apartment at Tarleton’s Langdon Center in Granbury,” said Dr. Koy Floyd, Tarleton’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement. “Jerry was a true curmudgeon and loved the written word. “He was a regular contributor to Southern Living and other national publications and served as a popular guest speaker for the university community and the Cross Timbers Region.”

Tackett, a Stephenville High School graduate and Plano resident, earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1961. He worked for a number of daily newspapers in Texas such as the Fort Worth Press, Star-Telegram, Houston Press, Stephenville Empire-Tribune, San Antonio Light and San Antonio Express-News.

During his Star-Telegram stint, Tackett won the Stanley Walker Award for Excellence in Journalism for a story about juveniles being forced to live in adult jails.

Tackett was also co-anchor, with Jim Lehrer, of Dallas-Fort Worth Channel 13’s Newsroom program. Tackett wrote primarily sports stories for the J-TAC. Like Flemmons, he wrote extensively in later years about the JFK assassination.

Lindsey, a native of San Saba and Georgetown resident, worked on the J-TAC from 1957-59 and went on to Texas Tech, where he received his bachelor’s degree.

Lindsey was for 18 years the well-respected state editor at the Star-Telegram before retiring in March of 2000. Lindsey, like Flemmons, was part of the Star-Telegram’s old guard of Texas writers, reporters and editors.

Prior to joining The Fort Worth Star-Telegram staff in 1982, Lindsey worked on The Brownwood Bulletin, The Del Rio News-Herald and The Austin American-Statesman. He also worked with the United Press International (UPI) in the Austin Capital Bureau for 17 years — 15 of these years as the Bureau Chief

Before becoming a journalist, Norman made news as a standout football player at Glen Rose High School. At Tarleton, he was a reporter for the J-TAC from 1955-56. After receiving his journalism degree from Sam Houston State University, Norman joined the sports staff of the Abilene Reporter-News.

Later, as a fixture of the Star-Telegram sports department, he was renowned as one of America’s top rodeo writers. He retired from journalism to become a rural mail carrier in Parker County but still does freelance writing for rodeo publications.

The Regents Professor Award program was established in 1996 to recognize and honor faculty members who have made exemplary contributions to their university or agency and to the people of the state of Texas. Since its adoption, 105 faculty members from A&M System universities, agencies and the Health Science Center have been recognized with this prestigious award.

“As I understand, the purpose of the award is to honor individuals whose performance and contributions as faculty members have been deemed exemplary at the university-level, community-level, and state-level,” said Dr. Betty Monk, educational leadership and policy studies department head. “Don Beach has met and, no doubt, exceeded these requirements. I am certain he will continue to fulfill the expectation of being a role model in the Texas A&M System and at Tarleton. We are pleased that our colleague and friend has been honored in this manner.”

Beach received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Tech University. Upon graduation, Beach taught science classes at Smyer Independent School District (ISD) and then Post ISD. He went on to receive his doctorate from the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. After completing his doctoral program, Beach was an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Beach came to Tarleton in 1981 as a professor and dean in the school of education and fine arts. In 1987, he stepped down to assume full-time teaching responsibilities and to work on publishing a textbook.

Beach has received numerous awards at Tarleton including the following: O.A. Grant Excellence in Teachin, ATE Laureate Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Teaching Profession from the Association of Teacher Education, Ted Booker Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teacher Education from the Texas Society of College Teachers of Education and many others.

Over the years he has taught and advised many students all while remaining an active and well-recognized contributor to the improvement of teachers, teaching and administration. Fortunately for Tarleton and its students, Beach’s love of teaching in higher education keeps him from mulling over retirement.

Diana Solomon-Glover, a classically-trained lyric soprano steeped in the African-American musical tradition, will perform a selection of spirituals and several arias from Georges Bizet’s opera “Carmen” during the concert at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center. A “Meet the Artists” reception will follow the performance.

The Wind Ensemble is conducted by Dr. Reginald M. Houze, interim assistant professor and director of bands.

The program for the evening also includes John Philip Sousa’s “Grand Promenade at The White House” and “Easter Monday on The White House Lawn” and Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry” and “Shepherd’s Hey.”

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Dr. David Weissenburger assumed the duties as head of Tarleton State University’s department of psychology and counseling at the beginning of the Spring 2009 semester.

He replaces Dr. Robert Newby who returned to full-time teaching duties in the department.

Weissenburger has more than 14 years experience as a full-time university faculty member and joined Tarleton in 1999 at Tarleton-Central Texas campus. He joined faculty at the Stephenville campus in June 2005. Awarded the rank of professor in 2004, he teaches psychology, counseling psychology, educational psychology and counseling.

As department head, Weissenburger said his focus is to promote and facilitate the implementation of the four “Es” strategic goals as identified by President F. Dominic Dottavio.

“I plan to be highly supportive and a strong advocate for the department’s students, faculty, staff and programs in that effort,” Weissenburger said. “I am enthusiastic about my appointment. I work with some outstanding faculty and staff in our department.”

Weissenburger has held a number of leadership experiences prior to the appointment of department head. He served as president of Tarleton’s Faculty Senate and is president of the Texas Council of Faculty Senates. Outside the field of higher education, he was vice president of assessment and search services for a psychological test publisher, president of a non-profit organization and an administrator at state and community mental health facilities.

“It is an honor to be the department head with so many opportunities at this time,” Weissenburger said. “The department is growing and expanding its reach with new programs and offerings at different geographical locations. Tarleton is truly a great place to be.”

A recent accomplishment of Weissenburger’s was the development of the newly approved Specialist in School Psychology degree.

Weissenburger earned a doctorate in school psychology at Texas Woman’s University. He holds a master of arts degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and a bachelor of science from Western Illinois University.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University will host 10 separate orientations this summer to help future students adjust to college life and learn more about Tarleton.

All new students and transfers with less than 30 hours are required to attend one of the sessions.

“Participating in Texan Orientation gives students an opportunity to become acquainted with the university, meet with an academic adviser, engage with peers, register for fall classes, learn about university life and become familiar with the many university resources,” said Donna Strohmeyer, director of Student Activities.

There will be seven overnight sessions and three one-day sessions for non-traditional and commuting students. The first two sessions are designated for Texan Scholars.

Orientation dates include the following: June 11-12, June 15-15, June 18-19, June 25-26, July 9-10, July 16-17, July 23-24, July 29, July 31 and Aug. 3.

Texan Orientation is only a part of the first-year experience at Tarleton. Students also have the opportunity to attend Duck Camp and use the Residential College and Learning Communities to help with the transition.

“Throughout the first year, a variety of curricular and co-curricular opportunities will enhance students’ intellectual, social and cultural experiences and help them develop into a global citizen,” said Strohmeyer.

Invitations to the Texan Scholars sessions will be mailed mid-March and invitations to other sessions will be mailed mid-May.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—One of the most anticipated construction projects on Tarleton State University’s campus is about to break ground. On Feb. 27 at 10 a.m., a groundbreaking ceremony will be held to mark the beginning of construction on the university’s Southwest Regional Dairy Center, which is designed to be a model dairy.

The highly anticipated center is expected to be a premier learning and research dairy serving Texas and its surrounding states.

“We plan to open the dairy center up to other universities in the region so that they may also be able to use it for research and learning opportunities,” said Dr. Barry Lambert, department head and dairy science specialist. “We are working with others in the design phase so it will be useful to other universities and other groups, including industry.”

In addition to traditional dairy science research, other research applications that will be conducted at the center include business, finance, engineering, medical, animal behavior, labor management, energy recovery from agricultural wastes and environmental sciences. It will also serve as a center for agricultural undergraduate research.

Key points in the innovative design of the center include a rotary parlor, auto animal ID and multiple energy recovery systems. A start-up company in Waco, called EQMA, already has plans to build a demonstration plant at the center that will be able to turn manure into ethanol. Other industry partners are developing plans for methane, algae, biodiesel and additional innovative energy conversion technologies.

“Eventually, we would love for energy recovery systems at the dairy to help offset a portion or all of the facility’s electrical costs,” Lambert said.

Because of its location in the Bosque River watershed, much effort is being made to make the facility as environmentally friendly as possible.

“Restrictions are different in this watershed than others,” Lambert said. “Our environmental engineers are working with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to make sure the dairy has the minimal environmental impact that science currently allows.”

Future research and development will further refine and enhance the technology to lessen the center’s environmental impact.

Construction is expected to last about a year, but the hope is that the center will start milking cows by January 2010.

The main architectural engineering firm for the project is Hanfeld Hoffer Stanford, which is based out of Fort Worth. However assisting in the center’s design is Five G Consulting, which is a dairy design company.

Officials participating in the groundbreaking include Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio, other university officials, Congressman John Carter (R-TX) and State Representative Sid Miller (District 59), who was instrumental in securing funding for the facility’s construction.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s rodeo teams traveled to Canyon, Texas, to compete in the West Texas A&M University college rodeo held March 12-14. The team not only had to compete against 14 other colleges, but also against freezing temperatures and inches of snow at the outdoor facility.

Nineteen students represented Tarleton in the short round on March 14. The men’s team finished fourth, while the women’s team earned numerous points counting for individual event standings.

The men’s team points were earned by two individuals: Isaac Diaz, previous National Finals Rodeo qualifier, and Justin Briggs, a Stephenville resident and many time high-money heeler at U.S. Team Roping Rodeo Championship events.

Diaz made a clean sweep in the saddle bronc riding and won the long round, short round and average. His scores of 76 and 88 gave him a total on two horses of 164 points, which was 20 points higher than the next competitor. Head coach Mark Eakin was excited to sign this young super star to his team roster earlier this semester. Even though Diaz missed the first six college rodeos, he moved into the top 10 and within 55 points from fourth place in the Southwest region standings.

Briggs and team roping heading partner Chase Massengill, of South Plains College, have dominated the team roping this semester. The team won the short round and placed second in the average this weekend. Briggs has now moved into first in the Southwest region heeling standings.

Cole Fincher, another Stephenville resident, moved into the top six of the region in tie-down roping. Fincher won the first round with a time of 8.8 seconds, split third and fourth in the short round and third in the average. Cimarron Thompson and Chad Williams also earned points.

Two bull riders made good rides this weekend. Stetson Posas rode for 82 points in the long round to place second and also fourth in the average. Justin Oliver placed fifth in the long round and sixth in the average.

Individually for Tarleton’s women, Cheyenne Motley also earned points and was a contender for the all-around. Motley won the short round and placed second in the average in breakaway roping and earned points in the goat tying. Unfortunately, she fell just short of the all-around cowgirl title for the weekend.

In barrel racing, Lillian McMullan won third in the short round and average and Ashley Moberg won the first round with a 16.55 run and ended up fifth in the short round and fourth in the average.

Other Tarleton members making it to the short round included: Lucas Butler, Kiel Rown, Justin Oliver, Kirby Eppert, Cynda Norell, Mallory Brown, Lena Floyd, Fran Surles and Jim Kolka.

One of the struggles coaches face in picking the team each weekend is that the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association only allows a coach to put six men and four women on the team each weekend. Fortunately, individuals earning points allow for more team members to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR). Tarleton’s head coach and staff have set a goal to have more than six men and four women qualify for the CNFR this year.

Tarleton’s rodeo teams will next compete in the Odessa College Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, on March 26-28.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Each year in March, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) honors social workers across the country during the National Professional Social Work Month.

On March 7, the NASW/Texas Tarrant County Branch honored Lucille Armstrong, a Tarleton State University faculty member and licensed clinical social worker, with a distinguished award—the 2009 Social Worker of the Year Award.

Armstrong is the Title IV-E Child Welfare Stipend Project Director in Tarleton’s social work program. She s recognized for her advocacy for children by preparing social work students for employment positions in conservatorship and foster care for the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

In addition, Armstrong was recognized for her numerous community involvement through the local Kiwanis Club. Her involvement in Kiwanis activities includes supporting area youth sports, scouting, CASA for the Cross Timbers Area and the Child Protective Services Rainbow Room. She serves as the co-chair of the local Community Resource Coordination group and is involved in developing service plans for children and their families through interagency cooperation. She is also a member of the Stephenville Social Service Network.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s livestock judging team recently traveled to Oklahoma and Missouri and returned with several individual and team wins.

Team members include Eric Castle from Louisburg, Kan.; Kassie Metcalf from Center Point, Texas; Diana North from Gause, Texas; Richard Foster from Wallis, Texas; and Michael Donalson from Katy, Texas.

Accompanying the team were faculty coordinator and coach Jared Jackson and graduate assistant coach Jeff Jackson.

The team competed on Oct. 27 at the Buck Cattle Company Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Contest in Madill, Okla. Individually for Tarleton, Metcalf placed third overall and North placed fifth overall.

The team then traveled to Missouri on Nov. 1 for the American Royal to compete against 27 teams from across the United States. The team placed ninth overall. Individually, Foster placed fourth in sheep and the team placed second in the same category.

“Tarleton’s livestock judging team achieved a great accomplishment by placing in the top 10 at the American Royal National Livestock Judging Senior College contest in Kansas City,” Jackson said.

The team’s next and final contest for 2008 is the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 17. This contest officially crowns the 2008 National Champion Livestock Judging Team as well as the Top 10 National Livestock Judging Teams.

Not only is winning the NAILE prestigious and allows for bragging rights, but every year the contest also adds additional prestige as it brings back the winning teams from 10 and 40 years ago.

GRANBURY, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Educational Center in Granbury is offering an elegant hors d’oeurves and wine pairing class at the Inn on Lake Granbury.

The class will offer participants the chance to learn how to serve interesting, sophisticated hors d’oeurves and wines that will have people talking this holiday season. The class is scheduled for Nov. 18 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Jason Harper, Fort Worth Central Market chef and cooking school manager, will be the culinary expert for the cooking demonstration. Harper will use step-by-step instructions on how to create superb hors d’oeurves and the method on how to pair them with wines for holiday entertaining.

The list of items featured during the presentation will include curried beef wontons, achiote shrimp skewers with pineapple confetti, citrus soy-glazed pork satays, grilled manchego brioche bites and sour cherry baklava. Participants will have the chance to sample great food, have fun, meet new friends and take home fresh ideas and new recipes.

GRANBURY, TEXAS—Big Daddy & the Butter Biscuits are cooking up two special shows during the 31st annual General Granbury’s Birthday Party Festival and Bean, Ribs and Brisket Cook-Off.

The show, “Biscuits & Beans,” will be at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, at Tarleton State University’s Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Educational Center Concert Hall. Tickets are $10.

Royce Cooper (Big Daddy) and Peggy Bott-Kirby and Heatherton Hardy-Wilson (the Butter Biscuits) are veteran Granbury Opera House performers.

The group has performed at conventions, festivals, benefits and theater venues including Bass Hall, creating a large following all over the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Cooper is a pianist, arranger, singer and director. During the years, he has directed and played at hundreds of venues. He has founded and performed with several highly successful and critically acclaimed cabaret acts including Howard and the Fine Sisters and Big Daddy and the Butter Biscuits.

Hardy-Wilson has been a long-time theater professional with her first performance at age 12 in “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” at the Dallas Theater Center. She and Cooper are longtime friends who have performed together in a variety of acts during the years.

Bott-Kirby joined the group two years ago. She has performed as a musical director, vocal coach and at multiple venues in the Fort Worth area. She has taught classes and workshops in creative expression, voice, mime and theater arts.

The Historic Granbury Merchants Association hosts the annual birthday celebration. Other events include a cake cutting ceremony, bean, brisket and ribs cook-off, a bean-eating contest, games and rides for children, a bike and trike parade, a cake walk and family carnival.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—A Tarleton State University professor and two Stephenville Independent School District (SISD) physical education instructors recently spoke about a collaborative fitness effort at a convention in Austin.

Dr. Joe Gillespie, Jill Heupel and Wade Whitehead were invited to speak about FITNESSGRAM, a partnership between Stephenville ISD and Tarleton, at the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Convention in Austin on Feb. 9.

The fitness collaboration began during the 1980s with Gillespie taking his Tests and Measurements class to Gilbert Intermediate School to assist the public schools with health-related fitness testing.

Senate Bill 530 was passed in 2008 and mandated that all public schools in the state assess the health-related fitness of students in grades three through 12. SISD and Tarleton have been the leaders in the state with the implementation of the law, and many surrounding school districts have looked to the collaboration for assistance.

Heupel, Whitehead, Mary Pack, Emma Jimenez, D’Anna Green and Mike Carroll from SISD have worked with Tarleton students to implement the program.

For many years, students in Dr. Gillespie’s class have administered the FITNESSGRAM to all students in grades four through six. Now, the collaboration involves second through 12th grade.

Following testing of students, a fitness report card is issued for each public school student.

Developed by the Cooper Institute in Dallas, the FITNESSGRAM test measures three areas of fitness: aerobic capacity, body composition, muscle strength, endurance and flexibility. The test results help parents and physical education teachers identify students whose poor fitness may compromise their heath and education.

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA—Jimmy G. Cheek, the University of Florida’s senior vice president for agriculture and natural resources, has been named the next chancellor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Cheek accepted an offer from UT President John Petersen to become chancellor of the Knoxville campus and will begin in that role Feb. 1.

Cheek, part of UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences for 33 years, said he’s enthusiastic about the move, but will miss the institution where he’s served for so long.

“It’s difficult to leave. I’ve worked with many fine people in Florida, from faculty and staff to agricultural producers and 4-H members, from students and alumni to legislators and stakeholders. It has been an honor to be part of IFAS and the University of Florida. I am proud of our many accomplishments in meeting the state’s agricultural and natural resource needs,” said Cheek.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is the state’s flagship institution with approximately 27,000 students and 8,300 faculty and staff. Originally founded in 1794 as Blount College, and a land-grant university since 1869, UT offers more than 300 degree programs.

Cheek came to UF in 1975 as a faculty member in agricultural education and communication. He was assistant dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences from 1992-1999 and was its dean from 1999 until 2004, when he was tapped to lead IFAS.

With his move to Tennessee, the 62-year-old Texas native will assume leadership of a state university struggling with issues similar to those he’s been grappling with at UF—working to maintain strong academic programs amid lean economic times.

Cheek holds a bachelor’s degree and his doctoral degree from Texas A&M University and received his master’s degree from Lamar University. He is married to Ileen and they have two adult children and one granddaughter.

He attended Tarleton State University from 1965 to 1967, and was named outstanding freshman agricultural student in 1966. His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Geary B. Cheek, lived in Stephenville for many years.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s Career Services will host a spring job fair on March 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Thompson Student Center ballrooms.

This event is open to the public, Tarleton students and its alumni. A total of 50 companies are attending so far, and more are signing up everyday.

“The job fair is a great opportunity to make important contacts with potential employers,” said Darla Doty, director of Career Services. “We encourage all students to attend so they can network with employers and see what they are looking for in prospective hires.”

Career Services tips for the job fair include dressing appropriately, bringing extra copies of résumés, collecting business cards, asking about internships and listening effectively.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—The University Singers will perform a masterworks concert on Thursday, April 2, featuring Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem” and John Rutter’s “Te Deum.”

The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center Auditorium on the Tarleton State University campus.

“The ‘Requiem’ is one of the most beautiful settings of that text that I know,” said Dr. Charles Rives, director of choirs at Tarleton. “The Rutter ‘Te Deum’ with its strong rhythms and contemporary harmonies will be a wonderful contrast to the more reflective Fauré.”

Featured soloists are soprano Allison Kelley and baritones Josh Goodwyn and Samuel Teal.

General admission tickets, which will be on sale at 6:30 p.m. before the concert, are $5. Tarleton students, faculty and staff are admitted free with their Texan ID card.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s wind ensemble will present its first concert of the year on Mon., Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center auditorium. The ensemble is comprised of Tarleton’s finest brass, percussion and woodwind players. It is the premiere instrumental concert ensemble of the university.

Billed as “Music that goes bump in the night,” the concert will include several symphonic thrillers including “Bacchanale and Entry of Phryne” from “Faust”; “The Battle of Shiloh”; and, “The Universal Judgment.” Tarleton woodwind professor Greg Ball will be featured in a performance of Allesandra Stardella’s “Aria di chiesa – Pieta Signore” and Tarleton’s associate band director, Richard R. Bahner, will guest conduct the Minuet from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 in E-flat. A meet and greet reception will follow the concert.

This concert marks the first performance of the ensemble led by new faculty member Dr. Reginald M. Houze. Previously, Houze served on the faculties at the University of Southern Mississippi and Clemson University.

"The students of the wind ensemble represent the most talented musicians on the Stephenville campus,” Houze said. “This particular program is quite demanding and the ensemble has been working hard, on a rather limited rehearsal schedule. We look forward to the opportunity to perform for Tarleton and the Stephenville community.”

General admission is $5. Free admission is granted to public school band members and directors as well as Tarleton staff, students and faculty with presentation of valid Texan Card.

GRANBURY, TEXAS—The Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Education Center in Granbury will feature the artwork of a recent graduate from Tarleton State University.

Melody Kennedy’s work will be on display April 4 through April 25 in the historical A.P. Gordon House. Visitors can see the artwork from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturdays.

Kennedy, a Haskell native, began experimenting with art in her last year of high school, where her creativity and passion for individuality was fueled. After high school, Kennedy continued her love of art at Tarleton and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in art with all-level teaching certification in fall 2008.

“The department of fine arts at Tarleton gave me the opportunity to experiment with various techniques in several media including watercolor, acrylic and printmaking, as well as broaden my horizons by entertaining my interests in art history,” she said. “In art, serenity and simplicity are my primary goals, and as an artist I strive to find myself through my work.”

Kennedy’s artwork often includes interpretations of places she has visited or people with whom she has made a connection. In 2007, she traveled to Italy to research the impact Italians had on art and history. While in Italy, she viewed masterpieces such as the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo’s “David.” This inspired her to construct a series of pieces, which were influenced by the architecture and culture of Italy.

“As a person in search of self, I look for meaning from people and places I come across and see art as the means for expression,” she said. “My work usually begins with an image, either in my head or from a photograph I’ve taken, then evolves into generally light, airy depictions of space and time.”

Kennedy’s work has been displayed in student art exhibits in the gallery of the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center and in juried shows. She is a member of national honor societies, Phi Eta Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi and Alpha Chi.

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS—Tarleton State University’s livestock judging team recently placed fourth overall at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth. The contest was held Feb. 6, with the awards ceremony held Feb. 7.

Texas A&M University won the contest, Texas Tech University placed second and Kansas State University placed third. Rounding out the top five teams was West Texas A&M University.

Fort Worth is one of the most competitive contests in the nation and this year was no exception. In the senior college division, 25 teams from across the nation competed for the top honors. Making the contest even more difficult on judgers is that it is the only major contest in which contestants must also evaluate horses.

In addition to placing fourth overall, the team placed third in horses and sheep and also placed fourth in cattle, hogs and reasons. Individually for the team, Kyle Carpenter of Glen Rose, Texas, placed third in sheep.

Including Carpenter, other team members include Lucas Barnett of Copperas Cove, Texas, Jacob Lange of Miles, Texas, Stephen Roop of Grapevine, Texas, Allison Skeels of Boerne, Texas, and Seth Hammermeister of West, Texas.

The team is coached by Jared Jackson and Jeff Jackson serves as the graduate assistant coach.

The next contest for Tarleton’s judging team will be the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo on Feb. 21.

KILLEEN–Lab technicians at Tarleton State University-Central Texas are offering a series of computer clinics, with all proceeds to benefit victims of Hurricane Ike.

The series includes a training session and two days of hands-on practice (participants must bring their own computer). The first training session is scheduled for Friday, October 10th from 5:30-8:00 p.m., with hands-on sessions Saturday and Sunday, October 11th and 12th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

The second training session and hands-on series is scheduled for October 17th, 18th and 19th. Please sign up for one series only.

A donation of $50 is requested for the training and hands-on sessions. If you choose to have your computer cleaned without attending the training session, the cost is $35. All proceeds will go to the Food Care Center and the Salvation Army in Killeen and will only be used for the victims of Hurricane Ike.
The training session topics include: basic hardware upgrades, updating windows, how to remove viruses, spyware and malware, and other utilities. The hands-on session includes applying the lessons learned from the training session to work on your personal computer.

The degree is intended to prepare students for graduate work in music, as well as those students who want to pursue a professional career in music performance. The new program will exist as an option to students interested in musical careers not related to public school teaching.

The program also serves to align Tarleton with peer institutions that offer degrees in music performance.

"This is an important milestone for Tarleton’s department of fine arts and a true measure of the faculty and students’ commitment to musical performance," said Dr. Teresa Davidian, department head of fine arts.

Approved by the Academic Council in March of this year, the program is not estimated to have an increase in cost as personnel, facilities and equipment, library, supplies and materials are all in place with the existing department and programs.

KILLEEN–Tarleton State University-Central Texas is now offering four new degrees: Bachelor of Science in Economics, Bachelor of Science in Finance, Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics, and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance.
