PALO PINTO – J. M. “Carp” Carpenter 81, passed away on Tuesday Oct. 13, 2009 in Fort Worth. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday Oct. 16, at Lone Camp Baptist Church, with Rev. Steve Lindsey and Rev. Randy Lawrence. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Strawn, Texas.

Stunting on Dallas highway leads to motorcycle fatality

Another motorcycle accident was caught on camera with a deadlier ending than footage seen in other incidents.

Less than a week after a police dashboard camera recorded footage of a truck hitting a college football star at an intersection in Iowa City, authorities from Dallas, Texas are releasing video showing the moments that led to a fatal motorcycle crash.

Recorded by cameras located along the city’s North Texas Tollway, video footage shows a group of riders on sportbikes doing stunts along the three lane highway. Dallas police tried to stop them and although the officers switched on their lights, they did not reportedly give pursuit.

As the riders sped away, weaving through traffic 22-year-old Preston Cass slammed into the rear of a pickup truck. Cass is seen in footage being thrown ahead of the truck along with his motorcycle. While the driver of the truck slowed down and pulled over, the other riders rode off.

Cass died a short time later at the hospital.

While charges are not expected against the driver of the truck, police are saying the other riders could be cited.

“We really want to get the message out to the folks that choose to do this kind of thing,” Trooper Lonny Haschel told the local Fox news station, “Go to some place other than a public roadway.”

Deaf Native American Man Shot in the Chest 4 Times

Williams, who was deaf, was shot Aug. 30 by Seattle police officer Ian Birk after he ignored orders to drop a three-inch folding knife, reports Carly Flandro of the Seattle Times:

A Seattle affiliate of the October 22nd Coalition, a national group concerned about police violence, organized Tuesday’s “vigil and speakout.” Several people spoke into a megaphone, held signs with Williams’ photo and clutched some of his carvings. Williams often carved and sold miniature totem poles.

The group included several of Williams’ relatives, as well as a number of homeless people who knew Williams from the streets. Wiilliams, a member of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Dititdaht First Nations in British Columbia, was well-known for the miniature totem poles he carved.

“He was a really gentle person,” Brenda Michaels tells Flandro. “Violence is not in his nature.”

As an aside to this story, reporter Carly Flandro once interned at the Missoulian. It’s wonderful to watch her covering important stories.
